What to Do

Active leisure enthusiasts certainly won't be bored here. Thanks to its own PADI diving center, guests can explore coral reefs inhabited by hundreds of fish species, barracudas, rays, and graceful turtles. In addition to diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and sailing are popular, while jet ski rides are available for thrill-seekers.

Special attention should be paid to the cultural program. The hotel grounds feature the Haus Tambaran (spirit house), where you can see traditional wood carvings and watch the weaving of the famous local bilum bags. Colorful cultural shows are often held here, allowing guests to experience the ancient traditions of the East Sepik people.

For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, there are four swimming pools, tennis courts, and cozy restaurants. Be sure to visit the Haus Win restaurant with its open terrace right by the water to enjoy dinner to the sound of the surf. You can also take an excursion to the village of BilBil or embark on an unforgettable helicopter safari over the jungle.

Getting There

To reach this tropical sanctuary, most travelers use domestic flights. The main arrival point is Madang Airport (MAG), which is served by regular Air Niugini flights from Port Moresby or Lae.

The hotel is conveniently located on Coastwatchers Ave, just a 10–15 minute drive from the airport. You can use taxi services or pre-book a comfortable transfer from the hotel itself, which will take you directly to the gates of the complex on the shores of the picturesque bay.

While reaching the city by land from other provinces can be difficult due to the local landscape, getting around the city itself is quite comfortable. For independent exploration of the surroundings, the hotel offers car and bicycle rentals.

History & Facts

The history of this place dates back to the era of German colonization before 1914. Back then, the first guesthouse was built on a vast coconut plantation right by the harbor. Unfortunately, the original building was destroyed during World War II, but it was rebuilt immediately after the conflict ended.

The modern chapter of the resort's life began in 1976, when the estate was acquired by the Barter family, led by Sir Peter Barter. It was under his leadership that the property transformed into the country's premier hotel, becoming a symbol of hospitality and high service standards. Sir Peter was not just an owner but a sincere lover of Melanesian culture, which is reflected in the complex's architecture and spirit.

Over the past decades, the hotel has been constantly modernized. In 2016, new modern apartments were opened, and the grounds were enhanced with the Sagen Aben beach park and unique areas for cultural events. For its achievements, the resort has repeatedly received prestigious awards from TripAdvisor.

Time Needed

If you aren't planning to stay but are visiting as a guest to explore the grounds, set aside about 2–4 hours to tour the gardens, visit the cultural sites, and relax by the water. This is plenty of time to appreciate the beauty of the tropical plants and the atmosphere of Melanesian life.

For those craving active recreation, significantly more time will be required. Scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, or a boat cruise usually take anywhere from half a day to a full day. Ideally, staying at the hotel for a few days will allow you to fully enjoy all the available activities and excursions.

Working Hours

Madang Resort welcomes guests 24/7. The reception desk operates 24 hours a day, ensuring that arriving tourists can check in at any time of the day or night.

The operating hours of specific facilities on-site, such as restaurants, the diving center, or the tour desk, may vary. To confirm current breakfast schedules or boat departure times, it is recommended to consult with the staff on-site or visit the resort's official website.
