General Weather Overview

Laoag is characterised by a typical tropical climate, delighting travellers with warmth throughout the year. The temperature regime here is remarkably stable: the thermometer rarely drops below comfortable levels, with average figures shifting smoothly from +24.7°C in January to +28.4°C in May. Thanks to this, it is never cold here, making the city an attractive destination for those who love summer.

However, when planning a trip, it is important to consider the distinct division into dry and wet seasons. The first half of the year, especially from January to April, is a time of sun and clear skies, when rain occurs extremely rarely (only 3–5 days per month). Starting from May and lasting through October, the picture changes: the rainy season arrives. Peak precipitation falls during the summer months, when the number of rainy days can reach 30 per month, creating high humidity alongside the persisting heat.

Temperature

The climate in Laoag is typical for the tropical latitudes of the Philippines: it is warm here all year round, and sharp temperature fluctuations are not observed. The coolest period, which can loosely be called "winter", spans the months from December to February. During this time, the average air temperature is a comfortable +24.7°C…+25.4°C. Nights in January and February bring a pleasant freshness, with the thermometer dropping to +22°C, creating ideal conditions for travellers who do not tolerate intense heat well.

The hottest weather sets in during April and May, when average figures rise to +28°C and above. May is traditionally considered the warmest month: daily maximums often reach +31°C. This period is characterised by intense heat that precedes the rainy season. Travellers should be prepared for the sun being particularly active during these months and plan excursions for the first half of the day.

During the rest of the year, especially from June to October, the temperature background remains stable, hovering around the +27°C mark. Diurnal temperature variations in Laoag are moderate: the difference between the daytime heat and evening coolness is usually between 3 to 5 degrees. Such a mild drop makes evenings warm enough to enjoy seaside walks or open-air dinners without the need to wear warm clothing.

Precipitation

In Laoag, rainfall seasonality is clearly traceable, which is characteristic of the Philippine climate. The year can generally be divided into a dry period and a rainy season. The most favourable time for those who prefer clear skies lasts from the end of the year to the middle of spring. The driest month is February, when rainfall levels tend towards zero, and the chance of getting caught in the rain is minimal (only about 3 days with precipitation for the entire month).

The rainy season begins in May and reaches its peak in the summer months. During this period, precipitation falls very frequently. The record holder for the number of overcast days is July: statistics show up to 30 days with precipitation, meaning it can rain practically every day. June and August are also distinguished by high humidity (about 28 rainy days), so travellers will definitely need umbrellas and raincoats at this time.

By autumn, the frequency of rains begins to gradually decrease. While September still sees about 25 days with precipitation, by October this number falls to 15. November and December mark the transition back to the dry season, when the number of wet days reduces to 9–10, making the weather more comfortable for walks and sightseeing.

What to Pack

Given Laoag's tropical climate, where warmth persists year-round with an average temperature of +24°C to +28°C, the foundation of your luggage should be light items made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton and linen. T-shirts, shorts, light dresses, and open footwear will be appropriate in any season. Since the sun here is very active, especially during the dry period from December to April, be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and high-protection sunscreen (SPF 50+) to avoid burns during walks.

If your trip falls during the rainy season, which lasts from May to October (with peak rainfall in July and August), the list of necessary items should be expanded. During this time, it can rain almost daily, so a lightweight but reliable raincoat or waterproof poncho will become indispensable companions. It is also recommended to choose quick-drying clothes and footwear that is water-resistant, such as rubber sandals or Crocs, as fabric trainers may take a long time to dry due to high humidity.

Despite the heat, it makes sense to bring one light long-sleeved top or hoodie. It will come in handy during bus journeys or visits to shopping centres where air conditioners often work at full power, as well as for evening walks during the "coolest" months—January and February—when the night temperature can drop to +22°C. Also, do not forget insect repellent and comfortable, worn-in shoes for exploring local attractions.
