General Weather Overview

Arad is characterised by a moderate continental climate, ensuring a clear distinction between the four seasons. The weather here is generally comfortable and predictable, without extreme temperature anomalies. This makes the city an attractive destination for travellers who appreciate the classic change of seasons: from blooming spring to golden autumn.

Summer in the city is usually warm and sunny, with temperatures often reaching 29°C in July and August, which is ideal for long walks and viewing the architecture. Winter, conversely, is cool but quite mild compared to other regions of Eastern Europe: the average temperature in January stays just above freezing, although night frosts happen regularly. Precipitation is distributed throughout the year, but it is worth noting that late spring and early summer (especially May) can be a bit rainier than other months.

Temperature

The climate in Arad is characterised by distinct seasonality, offering tourists a variety of weather conditions depending on the time of year. Summer here is truly warm, and at times hot: the highest temperatures are recorded in August, when the thermometer rises to an average of 29.8°C during the day. July is not far behind with daytime highs around 29°C. At the same time, nights in the summer period remain comfortable, with temperatures around 18°C, which is ideal for long evening strolls.

The winter season in Arad can be described as moderately cool and quite mild. The coldest month is traditionally January, when the average temperature is about 1.9°C, and night-time readings drop to -1.0°C. Severe frosts happen infrequently here, and even in December and February, daytime temperatures usually stay above freezing (from 4°C to 8°C), allowing for comfortable exploration of the city's architecture provided you have appropriate clothing.

Travellers should also take into account noticeable daily temperature fluctuations, especially in the spring and autumn periods. The difference between daytime warmth and night-time cool can be more than 10 degrees. For example, in April, the air warms up to a pleasant 17.6°C during the day, but cools down to 6.3°C by night. Therefore, when planning a trip during the shoulder seasons, it is recommended to bring layered clothing to easily adapt to weather changes throughout the day.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Arad is distributed quite unevenly throughout the year, although extreme fluctuations between seasons are not observed. In winter, especially in December and January, precipitation falls frequently — about 12 days a month. Given that the temperature during this period fluctuates around freezing and often drops below, rain often turns to snow, creating a typical Romanian winter atmosphere.

The wettest period is considered to be late spring and early summer. May is the record holder for the frequency of rain: statistics record up to 14 days with precipitation. June is also notable for humidity (about 13 rainy days) and shows a slightly higher level of rainfall compared to other months. In the warm season, rains often take the form of short showers that refresh the city after a hot day.

The most comfortable time for those who prefer dry weather is early to mid-autumn. October is statistically the driest month of the year, when the number of days with precipitation drops to 7, and their volume is minimal. August and September also delight travellers with relatively clear skies (about 8 rainy days), making this season an excellent choice for walking tours.

What to Pack

When packing your suitcase for Arad, focus on the distinct seasonality of the local climate. In winter, you will need a warm windproof jacket or down coat, a hat, and gloves, as the temperature stays around freezing, and frosts occur at night. In summer, when the thermometer often rises to +29°C and above, it is worth prioritising light items made of natural fabrics, and definitely bringing headwear and sunscreen.

Regardless of the time of year, comfortable, broken-in shoes for long walks around the city will be useful on the trip. Since rainy days happen regularly throughout the year (especially often in May and June), we recommend always having a compact umbrella or a light raincoat with you. In the off-season, it is best to use the principle of layering in clothing: a combination of a t-shirt, sweater, and windbreaker will allow you to feel comfortable with any change in weather.
