General Weather Overview

The climate of Bucharest is characterised as temperate-continental, with four clearly defined seasons. This means travellers can expect significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year, from cool winters to quite hot summers, which is important to consider when planning a trip and choosing a wardrobe.

Winters in Bucharest are generally cold: the average January temperature is around 1.6°C, with night frosts and daily highs around 5°C. Summer, conversely, is warm and often sunny, especially in July and August, when average temperatures reach 24-25°C, and maximums can rise above 30°C. Spring and autumn are pleasant transitional seasons with moderate temperatures. Precipitation is generally low and relatively evenly distributed throughout the year, with the highest number of rainy days (about 10-13 days) falling in the spring-summer period, although the total millimetres of precipitation remains low.

Temperature

The climate in Bucharest demonstrates notable seasonal temperature changes. The coldest month is typically January, when the average temperature holds at 1.6°C, while night lows can drop to -2.1°C, and daily highs barely reach 5.3°C. Conversely, the peak heat occurs in August, with an average temperature of 25.3°C; in this month, daily highs often rise above 31°C, and nights remain warm, with a minimum temperature around 19.3°C. July is also very warm, with averages only slightly lower than August's.

Summer months in Bucharest, especially July and August, are characterised by hot weather. Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 30°C, creating conditions for true summer heat. Even in June, when summer is just gaining momentum, the average maximum temperature reaches almost 28°C. Nights in the summer period are usually warm and comfortable, with average minimum temperatures from 17°C in June to over 19°C in July and August. The difference between day and night temperatures in summer can be quite substantial, reaching 10-12°C, which means a pleasant cooling of the air after a hot day.

Winter in the capital of Romania is cool, and at times frosty. From December to February, average temperatures range from 1.6°C (in January) to 4.2°C (in February), reflecting average values for December (3.3°C), January (1.6°C), and February (4.2°C). January stands out as the coldest period, with an average night low of -2.1°C. Daytime temperatures in winter usually remain above freezing, averaging from 5.3°C in January to 8.8°C in February. As in summer, fluctuations between day and night temperatures are also observed in winter, although less pronounced than in the warm season, amounting to approximately 6-9°C. The transitional seasons, spring and autumn, offer more moderate temperatures, gradually leading to summer heat or winter cool.

Precipitation

In Bucharest, precipitation is generally low throughout the year, with monthly amounts varying from 1 to 3 mm. A clearly defined rainy season with heavy rainfall is not observed here. Nevertheless, the frequency of precipitation changes by month. The highest amount of precipitation (3 mm) and the largest number of days with it (about 13 days) falls in June.

In winter, especially in January (average temperature 1.6°C, minimum -2.1°C) and December (average 3.3°C, minimum 0.0°C), precipitation, amounting to about 2 mm, is highly likely to fall as snow or icy drizzle. In these winter months, as well as in March, April, May, July, and November, the number of days with precipitation fluctuates from 8 to 10. In the other warm months, precipitation takes the form of rain.

The driest months in terms of total precipitation are February, August, and September, when only 1 mm falls. September also stands out as the month with the lowest frequency of precipitation — on average only about 4 days. February and August are also characterised by fewer days with precipitation, about 6 days each. Thus, although Bucharest is not distinguished by a large amount of precipitation, its distribution throughout the year is uneven in frequency, with peaks in late spring/early summer and some months in the autumn-winter period.

What to Pack

When packing your suitcase for a trip to Bucharest, it is important to consider seasonal weather changes. In summer (June-August), it can be quite hot here, so light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton t-shirts, shorts, skirts, and dresses, will be most comfortable. Do not forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, as daytime temperatures often exceed 30°C. Since June may see the highest number of rainy days, a light waterproof jacket or a compact umbrella might come in handy. Comfortable walking shoes are a must-have at any time of year, as exploring the city on foot is a pure pleasure.

In winter (December-February), Bucharest is cool, with average temperatures hovering around zero, and night frosts occurring. You will need warm outerwear (a coat or jacket), sweaters, warm trousers, a hat, a scarf, and gloves. Given the possibility of snow, especially in January, waterproof and non-slip footwear will be very useful. In the off-season (spring: March-May, autumn: September-November), the weather can be changeable. The principle of layering works best here: t-shirts, shirts, light jumpers, and cardigans that can be removed or put on depending on the temperature. It is also worth taking a jacket or raincoat in case of rain and cool weather, especially in spring and November days when the number of rainy days increases.

Regardless of the season, do not forget a power adapter if it is necessary for your devices. Overall, Bucharest is characterised by a temperate-continental climate, so preparing for the trip taking seasonal features into account will allow you to feel comfortable and enjoy all the charms of the Romanian capital. It is always useful to check the weather forecast directly before departure to make final adjustments to your luggage.
