Amurskiy Oblastnoy Krayevedcheskiy Muzey Im. G.s. Novikova-Daurskogo

About

In the heart of Blagoveshchensk lies one of the oldest and most significant cultural institutions in the Far East — the Novikov-Daursky Amur Regional Museum of Local Lore. This is a place where history comes to life within the walls of a magnificent federal architectural monument. The building, which previously housed the Kunst and Albers department store, is a work of art in itself, drawing the eye with its elegant late 19th and early 20th-century design.

The museum is rightfully considered the main treasure house of the Russia region on the banks of the Amur. Its funds hold more than 160,000 exhibits covering a vast span of time: from ancient eras to the present day. Here you can see authentic shaman costumes, the unique Ust-Nyukzha meteorite, and even the bones of fossilized animals that inhabited these lands millions of years ago.

It is not just a collection of antiquities, but a vibrant scientific and educational center. By combining classic collections with modern educational programs, the museum has become an essential stop for anyone wanting to understand the spirit of the Amur region and learn how this rugged but beautiful land was explored and developed.

What to Do

Visitors can look forward to a fascinating journey through the centuries. You can start your tour in the halls dedicated to the nature of the Amur region, which showcase the local flora and fauna, as well as remarkable paleontological finds. Moving on to the historical halls, be sure to note the lifestyle of the first settlers and the unique collection dedicated to the culture of the Evenks and Daurs.

Thoughtful guests are often deeply moved by the exhibition on political repressions. It offers a look at the country's history through the lens of those who were caught in the GULAG system. Additionally, the museum frequently hosts workshops and temporary themed exhibitions where you can not only watch but also try your hand at traditional crafts.

For those who prefer modern technology, electronic guides and digital projects are available. You can independently study the biographies of famous city residents through the "Blagoveshchentsy" project or explore rare editions from the book collection via interactive "Accessible Reading" systems.

Getting There

The museum takes pride of place in the very heart of the city at 165 Lenin Street. Located in the historical center, it is easily accessible for tourists walking along the embankment or exploring the central squares.

If you are in the city center, you can reach the museum building on foot in just a few minutes from V.I. Lenin Square or the Triumphal Arch. Regular public transport (buses and minibuses) also connects all districts of the city to the "Museum" or "Univermag" stops.

For those who prefer comfort, a taxi ride from any point in the center will take no more than 5–10 minutes. Thanks to its convenient location, a visit to the museum is easy to combine with lunch at one of the many cafes or restaurants located on Lenin Street.

History & Facts

The history of this cultural institution began on August 16 (28), 1891. It was founded following an exhibition organized by local gold miners specifically for the visit of Tsesarevich Nicholas, the future Emperor Nicholas II. The exhibits from that pavilion—mine models, photographs, and ore samples—became the core of the future museum collection.

For a long time, the collections moved from place to place until they settled in the current magnificent building. It formerly housed the luxurious department store of the German firm Kunst and Albers, whose architecture is still considered one of the city's main hallmarks.

Since 1993, the museum has borne the name of Grigory Stepanovich Novikov-Daursky. He was an outstanding local historian who dedicated over 30 years of his life to studying the region while working within the walls of this institution. His contribution to science and the preservation of the Amur region's memory is hard to overstate.

In recent decades, the museum has not shied away from complex topics. Since 2015, it has hosted an exhibition dedicated to political repressions in the Amur region, telling the story of the tragic pages of 20th-century history and the GULAG system, parts of which were located within the province.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the main exhibitions, learn about the history of indigenous peoples, and appreciate the region's natural wealth, we recommend allowing 2 to 3 hours for your visit. The museum is quite large, and every hall is filled with small, interesting details.

If you plan to participate in workshops or study the temporary exhibitions in detail, your visit may last half a day. History buffs should set aside extra time to look through unique archival documents and rare books.
