Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

About

The majestic Annunciation Cathedral is not just the main church of the diocese, but the true heart of the city of Blagoveshchensk. Erected on a historic site where the first church of the Amur Region once stood, the cathedral has become a symbol of generational continuity and loyalty to traditions in Russia.

The architectural appearance of the cathedral, built at the turn of the 21st century, follows the traditional "brick style" characteristic of Orthodox architecture of the late 19th century. The building is cross-shaped and crowned with seven gilded domes, with an eighth dome topping the tall bell tower. The height of the main dome reaches nearly 39 meters, making the cathedral one of the most prominent landmarks in the city skyline.

Inside, the cathedral can accommodate up to 540 parishioners. In addition to three altars, the basement floor houses a baptistery with a baptismal pool. It is a significant cultural and spiritual site that attracts travelers with its monumentality and the austere beauty of its brickwork.

What to Do

At the cathedral, visitors can not only admire the architecture but also pay respects to the most important sacred object of the Far East — the miraculous Albazin Icon of the Mother of God. This image, revered as the protector of the Amur borders, was solemnly transferred to the church in 2003 and is the main object of pilgrimage.

Inside, it is worth noting the arrangement of the three side-chapels: the central one is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, the right one to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and the left one to Saint Innocent (Veniaminov). Believers can take part in regular liturgies, while tourists can appreciate the skill of the icon painters and the grandeur of the interiors.

Be sure to walk around the exterior of the cathedral to see the brick decor details and the monumental 32.5-meter-high bell tower. The surrounding grounds are well-maintained, providing a space for quiet reflection and contemplation of the golden domes against the Amur sky.

Getting There

The Annunciation Cathedral is located at 15 Relochny Lane. This is the historic part of the city, known as "Ryolka" — it was here, in the middle of the 19th century, that the history of the future city began. Thanks to its central location, the cathedral is easy to reach from any part of the city.

If you are using public transport, choose bus routes that stop near Lenin or Komsomolskaya streets, from where you can walk to the cathedral in just a few minutes. A taxi ride from the central square or the Amur embankment will take about 5–10 minutes.

For those who prefer private transport, there are parking spaces available near the cathedral. The exact coordinates for your GPS are: 50.261598° N, 127.513896° E.

History & Facts

The history of this place is unique: Blagoveshchensk is considered the only city in the country that began with the construction of a temple. In 1857, pioneer Cossacks built a wooden St. Nicholas Church here — the first building of the future city. Later, in 1858, with the participation of Count Nikolay Muravyov-Amursky and Saint Innocent, the foundation for a stone cathedral was laid, and it was consecrated in 1864. A significant event was the 1891 visit of the future Emperor Nicholas II, who prayed within these walls.

Unfortunately, the original stone cathedral was destroyed in the 1930s. The modern building was erected on the same historical foundation between 1997 and 2003. Construction took place during challenging times for Russia, but thanks to donations from citizens and the efforts of Archbishop Gabriel, the project was successfully completed.

The new cathedral recreates the appearance of the historic Pokrovo-Nikolskaya Church that previously stood on the site. The first liturgy in the still-under-construction church was held on Christmas in 2000, and the full consecration took place in 2003, marking the spiritual rebirth of the entire Amur Region.

Time Needed

A leisurely tour of the cathedral’s architecture, interior, and grounds usually takes from 1 to 2 hours. This is enough time to examine the iconostasis, pay respects to the sacred relics, and experience the peaceful atmosphere of the place.

If you plan to attend a morning or evening service, we recommend scheduling about 3 hours. During major church holidays, the length of your stay may increase due to the festive and prolonged nature of the services.

Working Hours

The doors of the Annunciation Cathedral are open to parishioners and tourists daily. Usually, the church is open from 08:00 to 18:00 or 19:00, though on Fridays it opens slightly earlier, at 07:00.

Please keep in mind that during liturgies (especially on Sundays and holidays), access to certain parts of the church for sightseeing may be limited. Before visiting, it is recommended to check the official website of the diocese for the current service schedule.
