General Weather Overview

Kurgan is characterized by a continental climate, which means distinct seasons with significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year. Travellers should be prepared for both frosty winters and warm summers when planning their trip to this region of Russia.

Winters in Kurgan are quite harsh, with temperatures often dropping significantly below freezing, especially in January and February. Summer, on the other hand, is warm and pleasant, with temperatures peaking in July when average values reach a comfortable +20°C. June and August also offer warm weather, ideal for walking and exploring the city.

One of the features of Kurgan's climate is the relatively low amount of precipitation throughout the year. Even in the summer months, when the number of rainy days increases slightly, the total amount of rainfall remains small. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons when the weather can be changeable, with gradual warming in April-May and cooling in September-October.

The temperature regime in Kurgan demonstrates significant annual fluctuations, typical of a continental climate. The coldest month is usually January, when the average temperature drops to -14.8°C, and nightly lows can reach -18.5°C. Daily highs in January rarely rise above -11.1°C. February and December are also characterized by frosty weather with average temperatures around -12°C, with minimum values down to -16.0°C in February and -15.1°C in December. Conversely, the peak of summer heat occurs in July, when the average temperature is a comfortable +20.2°C, and the daytime air warms up to an average of +25.4°C, while nights remain warm with temperatures around +14.9°C.

The summer months in Kurgan – June, July, and August – give residents and visitors truly warm weather. In June, the average temperature holds at +16.9°C, with daily highs around +22.2°C and nightly lows in the region of +11.6°C. July, as mentioned, is the hottest, with average daily readings of +25.4°C. In August, the heat subsides slightly, the average temperature is +18.0°C, the air warms up to +23.1°C during the day, and cools down to +12.9°C at night. The summer period is characterized by noticeable diurnal temperature fluctuations reaching 10-13 degrees (for example, in May the difference between the average maximum and minimum temperature is about 12.9°C, in July - 10.5°C), which provides pleasant coolness in the evenings after a hot day.

The winter period in Kurgan, spanning December, January, and February, is characterized by persistent frosts. In December, the average temperature is -11.8°C, with daily highs around -8.5°C and nightly drops to -15.1°C. January brings the most severe cold: the average temperature is -14.8°C, the thermometer shows an average of -11.1°C during the day, and drops to -18.5°C at night. In February, the frosts weaken slightly but remain significant: the average temperature is -12.2°C, daytime is around -8.4°C, and nighttime is -16.0°C. Diurnal temperature fluctuations in winter are less pronounced than in summer and amount to approximately 6-8 degrees (for example, in January the difference is about 7.4°C), which maintains consistently cold weather.

Precipitation

The nature of precipitation in Kurgan is distinguished by its small total amount throughout the year. Nevertheless, some seasonality is observed: summer months bring slightly more precipitation in the form of rain, while in winter, at freezing temperatures, snow falls. The city is not prone to heavy downpours or abundant snowfalls, but precipitation occurs with certain regularity.

The summer period, especially June, July, and August, stands out as relatively the wettest. During these months, an average of 2 mm of precipitation falls. June leads in the number of days with precipitation – about 11 days, while in July and August, there are approximately 10 days each. Precipitation at this time of year is predominantly rain, which can be brief and refreshing.

In the remaining months, the amount of precipitation is even lower, averaging 1 mm. In winter, from November to March, this is mainly snow. The "driest" in terms of precipitation frequency (number of days with it) are January and February, when there are only 6 days each with precipitation. In transitional seasons, such as April and October, about 1 mm of precipitation also falls, which can be in the form of rain or wet snow, while in October and November the number of days with precipitation reaches 9.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Kurgan, it is important to consider its continental climate with clearly defined seasons. The basis of your wardrobe is comfortable shoes for walking around the city at any time of the year. The principle of layering in clothing will become your best friend, allowing you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day, especially in the off-season.

In winter (from December to February), strong frosts persist in Kurgan, with average temperatures dropping to -12°C...-15°C, and nightly temperatures can be even lower. Therefore, your suitcase must include: very warm outerwear (a down jacket or fur coat designed for severe freezing temperatures), insulated trousers, thermal underwear, wool sweaters, warm socks, a hat that covers your ears, a voluminous scarf, and windproof mittens or gloves. Do not forget warm, waterproof shoes with non-slip soles, as snow is possible.

Summer (from June to August) in Kurgan is warm, with average temperatures of +17°C...+20°C and daily highs up to +25°C. For this period, light natural fabrics are suitable: t-shirts, shorts, dresses, sundresses. However, evenings can be cool, so a light jacket, cardigan, or sweater will come in handy. Although there is little precipitation (about 2 mm in summer months, but up to 10-11 rainy days), a compact umbrella or raincoat will not be superfluous. Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. In spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), the weather is changeable: from cool to moderately warm. You will need a mid-season jacket, sweaters, jeans or thick trousers, as well as waterproof shoes, especially in April and October when precipitation in the form of rain or wet snow is possible.
