On the shores of Lake Onega in Petrozavodsk lies a truly vibrant and unusual place — the "Polar Odyssey" Maritime Historical and Cultural Center. It is more than just a traditional museum; it’s a unique blend of a seafaring club, a working shipyard, and an educational hub. Here, the traditions of ancient wooden architecture are carefully revived, as replicas of historic vessels are recreated based on original blueprints.

The center's pride is its flotilla. Visitors can see authentic wooden sailboats: the famous Pomor lodya 'Svyatitel Nikolai' (St. Nicholas), the Varangian lodya 'Rurik', and the brigantine 'Polar Odyssey'. The highlight of this complex is that all its exhibits are working vessels that regularly participate in expeditions, film shoots, and international festivals both within Russia and abroad.
The center's grounds include a museum exhibition and workshops where new ships are born right before visitors' eyes. This is a "museum without borders," where maritime history comes to life, allowing everyone to feel like a pioneer of the northern seas and touch the rugged but beautiful maritime culture.
