How to get to Solovetsky

Solovetsky is a unique archipelago in the White Sea, administratively part of the Arkhangelsk region of Russia, renowned for its majestic monastery and rugged northern nature. To visit Solovetsky, travelers most often choose combined routes involving a flight or train journey followed by a transfer to water transport. There are various ways to reach Solovetsky, but logistics should be planned well in advance, taking into account its island location and the seasonality of navigation.

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach the archipelago is to take a direct flight to the local Solovki airport. This small air hub accepts regular flights, ensuring a reliable connection between the islands and the mainland, which is particularly important during periods when sea navigation is closed.

Most often, tourists fly in transit through major regional centers. The nearest major hub is Arkhangelsk, located approximately 236 km away, from where flights to the islands are operated. You can also consider routes via Kirovsk or even Kuusamo in Finland if you are traveling on a complex itinerary, though the final leg of the journey will still pass through Russian departure airports.

There is no direct railway connection to the archipelago, as there is no train station in the Solovetsky settlement itself. Travelers wishing to arrive by train must travel to the nearest major stations on the mainland and then transfer to a plane or ship.

A popular option is a trip to the city of Arkhangelsk, which is located 236 km from the islands and serves as an important transport hub. The railway also leads towards the city of Kirovsk (about 303 km), from where you can continue your journey to the White Sea coast for further crossing.

Since Solovetsky is located on islands, it is impossible to get here exclusively by bus. Intercity bus services can only take tourists to port cities on the White Sea coast, from where the journey must be continued by water or air transport.

Organized tourist groups often use bus transfers as part of a complex route. However, independent travelers should note that there may be few direct regular bus services to the crossing point, and their schedule is often tied to the navigation season.

Traveling by car to the shores of the White Sea is a true adventure, but the vehicle will have to be left on the mainland before the ferry crossing. One of the popular routes runs from the city of Arkhangelsk: the distance is over 1130 km (driving around the bay), and the travel time will take about 15 hours.

An alternative option for those driving from the north is the route from the city of Kirovsk. In this case, the distance will be approximately 497 km, which will require about 7.5 hours behind the wheel. There is also a route from the border side, for example from Kuusamo (about 627 km), but this is relevant for a limited number of car tourists.

A trip to the Solovetsky Archipelago requires careful preparation, as this is a place with a special climate and way of life. To ensure your journey is comfortable, please review the main recommendations.

1. Clothing and Items. The weather on the White Sea is changeable even in summer. Be sure to bring a windproof jacket, a raincoat, a warm sweater, and comfortable, broken-in waterproof shoes for long walks.
2. Transport. There is practically no public transport on the islands. The main ways to get around are on foot or by bicycle, which can be rented. For distant excursions, local vans or boats are used.
3. Finances. It is recommended to carry a sufficient supply of cash. ATMs may work intermittently, and cards are not accepted in all souvenir stalls and small shops.
4. Health and Safety. There are few pharmacies on the island, and the assortment is limited. Assemble a personal first aid kit, including remedies for motion sickness, repellents for mosquitoes and midges, as well as personal medications.
5. Communication. The main language of communication is Russian. Mobile connection and internet are available in the settlement area, but the signal may disappear in remote hermitages.
6. Local Etiquette. Solovki is an active monastery and a holy place. When visiting temples and hermitages, women need a headscarf and a skirt, and men need trousers. Please behave modestly and respectfully.
7. What to Avoid. Do not make noise near religious sites or disturb the peace of the monastic community. It is strictly not recommended to litter or light fires in unauthorized places — the nature here is very fragile.
