How to get to Strezhevoy

Getting There: Introduction

Strezhevoy is the northernmost city in the Tomsk region, rightfully holding the unofficial title of the region's "oil capital." This young and neat settlement grew amidst the harsh Siberian taiga thanks to the development of rich deposits, becoming an important industrial centre on the map of Russia.

The city surprisingly combines the rhythm of modern life with the tranquility of a remote corner, surrounded by picturesque nature and the vast waters of the Ob River basin. A trip here is an opportunity to witness the true Siberian character, learn about the history of northern development, and appreciate the unique atmosphere of the city of oil workers.

By Plane

In Strezhevoy, there is an operating airport that receives aircraft from regional airlines. Direct flights regularly depart for here from Tomsk and Novosibirsk, allowing for quick access to the city from key transport hubs in Siberia.

Travel Tips

Preparing for a trip to Strezhevoy requires attention to detail, especially considering the harsh climate and the remoteness of the region. To ensure your journey goes smoothly and leaves only pleasant impressions, we have compiled several useful recommendations.

  1. Seasonal Clothing. The climate here is sharply continental. In winter, warm clothing is essential: a high-quality down jacket, thermal underwear, a hat, and footwear with good grip, as frosts can be very severe. In summer, the weather is changeable: it can be hot during the day, but evenings are often cool, so a light jacket or sweater in your luggage is mandatory.
  2. Transport within the city. Strezhevoy is a compact city, and many locations can be reached on foot. Public transport consists of buses, but the most convenient and affordable way for a tourist to get around remains a taxi, which can be ordered via apps or by phone.
  3. Finances and Payment. The official currency is the Russian Ruble. Bank cards are widely accepted in supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants. However, it is recommended to carry a small amount of cash to pay for fares in minibuses or purchases at small kiosks.
  4. Health and Safety. The city is safe for tourists, and the crime rate is low. The main "danger" is the weather conditions, so keep an eye on the forecast to avoid hypothermia. Pharmacies are available in all districts of the city, but it is better to bring specific medications with you.
  5. Communication. The primary and practically only language of communication is Russian. A small number of residents, mostly young people, speak English. If you do not speak Russian, install an offline translator on your phone in advance.
  6. Local Etiquette. Siberians are straightforward and hospitable people. It is customary to greet others when entering small spaces or an elevator. An important rule: you must remove your shoes when entering an apartment or house.
  7. What to Avoid. Do not attempt to venture into the taiga alone without an experienced guide or navigation equipment—it is easy to get lost in the forests. Also, do not plan long walks in winter at temperatures below -30°C without special equipment.
  8. Important Tip for Summer. If your trip falls in June or July, be sure to bring strong insect repellents and clothing with long sleeves. During this period, midges and mosquitoes (known locally as "gnus") are very active in the region and can spoil outdoor recreation.

Following these simple rules will help you feel confident and comfortable in any situation. May your acquaintance with the north of Russia be safe, peaceful, and fascinating!
