General Weather Overview

The climate in Taganrog can be characterised as temperate continental. This means the city experiences four distinct seasons with noticeable temperature fluctuations. Winters here are generally cool, with average temperatures around zero and below, whilst summers are warm and sunny, with temperatures often rising to a comfortable +25°C - +29°C.

One of the distinctive features of the weather in Taganrog is the relatively low amount of rainfall throughout the year, amounting to just 1-2 mm per month. The highest number of days with precipitation occurs during the winter months, although the total amount remains small. Summer months, especially August, are characterised by the fewest rainy days, making them ideal for walking and enjoying the warm weather.

Thus, travellers should expect a fairly cold winter, a warm and sometimes hot, predominantly dry summer, as well as pleasant transitional seasons — spring and autumn — when the weather delights with moderate temperatures.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Taganrog demonstrates a clear change of seasons with a distinct annual range. The hottest months are traditionally July and August, when the average air temperature holds at the +25.0°C mark. During these months, maximum daytime temperatures regularly reach +28.9°C in July and +29.1°C in August. Conversely, the coldest month of the year is January: the average temperature at this time is -0.6°C, and minimum night-time temperatures can drop to -2.7°C.

The summer period in Taganrog is characterised by warm and often hot weather. Already in June, the average temperature is a pleasant +22.9°C, with daytime highs up to +26.7°C. At the peak of summer, in July and August, the daytime heat can be quite perceptible. However, evenings and nights bring some relief: minimum temperatures during these months usually do not drop below +20.8°C - +21.0°C. Daily temperature fluctuations in summer are quite noticeable, averaging 7-8 degrees, which makes the evenings comfortable for relaxing after the daytime heat.

Winter in Taganrog is distinguished by cool weather, with temperatures often fluctuating around zero degrees. In December, the average temperature is +1.5°C, however, night-time values can drop to -0.2°C. January brings the lowest temperatures, when the daily average is -0.6°C, and minimum temperatures reach -2.7°C. February is usually slightly milder, with an average temperature of +0.4°C and minimum night-time temperatures around -2.0°C. In the winter months, the difference between day and night temperatures is smaller than in summer, amounting to approximately 3-5 degrees, indicating a more stable, albeit cold, temperature background throughout the day.

Precipitation

In Taganrog, a relatively low level of precipitation is observed throughout the year. The average monthly amount of precipitation fluctuates within 1-2 mm, indicating a predominantly dry climate. There is no pronounced rainy season in the city; precipitation is distributed quite evenly across the months in terms of total volume, however, its frequency and nature change noticeably depending on the season.

The highest frequency of precipitation is characteristic of the winter period. January is the month with the highest number of days with precipitation — on average 12 days, followed by December with 11 days. During these months, as well as in February (9 days with precipitation), when average temperatures are around the zero mark or drop lower, precipitation is most likely to fall in the form of snow or sleet. Given the small total amount (2 mm per month), this is usually light snowfall or frost. In spring and autumn, the number of days with precipitation is also noticeable: for example, in March, May, and November there are 9 days each, in April – 8, and in October – 7.

Summer months, on the contrary, are the driest in terms of precipitation frequency. August stands out as the month with the fewest days with precipitation — on average just 4 days. July (6 days) and June (7 days) are also distinguished by a small number of days with precipitation, which in the summer period usually takes the form of short-term rains. Despite the differences in frequency, the total amount of precipitation during these periods remains minimal, amounting to 1 mm per month for June, July, August, and September.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Taganrog, it is important to consider its pronounced seasonality. In winter (December-February), when average temperatures fluctuate around 0°C and can drop lower, you will need warm clothes: sweaters, fleece jackets, thermal underwear, a winter jacket or coat (preferably wind- and waterproof), a hat, a scarf, and gloves. Do not forget warm waterproof shoes, as precipitation in the form of snow is possible. In spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), the weather is changeable. At the beginning of these seasons, it is still cool, so a demi-season jacket, sweaters, and closed shoes will be useful. Closer to summer or in early autumn, a light jacket or windbreaker will suffice. The principle of layering in clothing will be most appropriate here.

Summer in Taganrog (June-August) is warm and sunny, with average temperatures of +23-25°C and peaks up to +29°C. The basis of your wardrobe should consist of light and breathable clothing: t-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and skirts made from natural fabrics. Be sure to take sunscreen, headwear (a hat or cap), and sunglasses. For evening walks, a light sweater or cardigan may be useful. Since even in dry months there are days with precipitation, a small folding umbrella or a light raincoat will not be amiss at any time of the year. And, of course, do not forget comfortable shoes for walking around the city, as there is plenty to see in Taganrog!
