About

In a quiet square in the historical part of Tobolsk stands one of the most poignant monuments in Russia. This elegant memorial honors the loyalty and resilience of the women who voluntarily journeyed to Siberia following their husbands, who were exiled after the Decembrist revolt.

The centerpiece is a 2.4-meter bronze statue. A delicate female figure in a 19th-century dress is set within a classic snow-white rotunda. The image is a collective one, radiating nobility, sorrow, and unwavering determination. The sculpture feels almost alive, as if frozen in motion beneath the dome of its pavilion.

The location is deeply symbolic—right across from the gates of the city's oldest cemetery, Zavalnoye Cemetery. Many of those to whom this monument is dedicated are buried here. Today, it is a key stop on tourist routes, reminding visitors of the "Golden Age" of Russian spirituality and the incredible lives that shaped the region.

What to Do

When visiting the monument, start by taking a slow walk around the rotunda to admire the details of the bronze casting. The craftsmanship is so fine that the light fabric of the dress seems ready to rustle in the wind. This is a wonderful spot for atmospheric photos, especially in the morning or by the light of the setting sun when the light hits the columns beautifully.

Continue your exploration along the Decembrist Wives' Alley, which runs along the brick wall of the necropolis. After seeing the monument, be sure to cross the street to visit Zavalnoye Cemetery itself. There, you can find the graves of famous Decembrists and their wives, as well as pay your respects to Pyotr Ershov, the author of the famous "The Little Humpbacked Horse." Such a walk helps you feel a deeper connection to history and the scale of the people who lived here in the 19th century.

If you're traveling with children or just want to relax, stop by the nearby Robinson Crusoe Square. This is a great place to quietly reflect on what you've seen, enjoy the greenery, and soak in the calm rhythm of Siberia’s spiritual capital.

Getting There

The memorial is located in the central part of the city on Semen Remezov Street, right at the entrance to the historical Zavalnoye Cemetery. Thanks to this location, the site is included in almost all popular walking routes through the upper part of the city.

If you prefer public transport, you can take buses or minibuses to the "Zavalnoye Kladbishche" (Zavalnoye Cemetery) or "Ulitsa Semena Remezova" (Semen Remezov Street) stops. From the Tobolsk Kremlin, the monument is just a 15–20 minute stroll away if you walk straight and enjoy the local architecture.

For those arriving in the city by train or plane, taking a taxi is the most convenient option. The trip from the train station or airport takes about 10–15 minutes. There are parking spaces near the monument, making it accessible for independent travelers.

History & Facts

This memorial is dedicated to the incredible courage of eleven women who, after the uprising of 1825, decided to leave their comfortable lives and titles behind to share the hardships of exile with their husbands. In the 1830s, 15 Decembrists lived in Tobolsk, and their loyal wives became true symbols of self-sacrifice and civic duty to the locals.

Natalia Fonvizina is considered one of the inspirations for the central figure of the monument. The lives of Praskovya Annenkova and other "great sufferers," as their contemporaries called them, are also closely tied to the city. Unfortunately, not all the women could survive the harsh Siberian climate—some found their final resting place right here, at Zavalnoye Cemetery.

The monument itself appeared on the city map relatively recently—its grand opening took place in August 2008. The project was designed by specialists from Omsk and brought to life by sculptors from Perm under the direction of Alexey Tyutnev. Since its installation, the composition has become an important part of the region's cultural heritage, a reminder of a devotion that proved stronger than harsh laws and vast distances.

Time Needed

A quick look at the sculpture and a few photos will take about 20–30 minutes. The monument is located in a cozy square, perfect for a short break during a city walk.

However, we recommend setting aside at least 1–1.5 hours for this location. This will give you time not only to appreciate the elegance of the rotunda but also to visit the neighboring Zavalnoye Cemetery, the final resting place of many historical figures, walk down the Decembrist Alley, and visit the nearby Robinson Crusoe Square.

Working Hours

The Monument to the Decembrists' Wives is located in a public city square and is therefore open 24/7. There are no days off or breaks, allowing tourists to admire the memorial both in daylight and in the evening when the city lights come on.

While access is free, it is recommended to check the city's official tourism portal for updates on the surrounding park areas, as seasonal maintenance work may occasionally take place in the square.
