The project's founders created a unique space in the Piesang Valley where sustainability is more than just a word—it's a way of life. In South Africa, it is rare to find such a harmonious blend: organic vegetables and herbs go straight from the garden beds to the plate, while the brewery's byproducts are used by local farmers. The on-site deli offers premium wines and fresh, house-made pastries.

The restaurant's interior is filled with light and offers panoramic views of the valley, creating the perfect atmosphere to explore South African cuisine with an emphasis on fresh produce. The menu features unique ingredients like naartjie and buchu, and everything from the bread to the desserts is prepared on-site, making every visit a true culinary discovery.

What to Do

A visit to Barrington's is a true sensory experience. Start your journey with a craft beer tasting. You can order a tasting flight of four core styles—lager, weiss, English ale, and rye pale ale—as well as try seasonal releases. Be sure to join a brewery tour to see the 500-liter vats and experience the rich aroma of malt and hops under the guidance of master brewer Marcus Meunier.

Foodies should look out for the smokehouse menu. Here, free-range meat is expertly prepared in a specialized smoker, giving dishes a distinct smoky flavor. You can choose a table by the fireplace for a cozy dinner or sit on the terrace overlooking the kitchen garden. Walking through this garden is a delight in itself; you can see the ingredients growing that will be on your plate in an hour.

If you're looking for a more relaxed time, spend some time at the bar trying signature cocktails or stop by the deli for a bottle of rare wine. For those who don't want to leave, the boutique hotel above the brewery offers stylish rooms where you can wake up to the scent of freshly baked bread and enjoy a lazy outdoor breakfast.

Getting There

Finding this gastronomic oasis is easy: it is located on Piesang Valley Road in Plettenberg Bay. The complex is just a few minutes' drive from the town center and popular beaches, making it a convenient stop for those traveling along the famous Garden Route.

Since public transport in the area is limited, the most comfortable way to get there is by private car or taxi from central Plettenberg Bay. The trip takes literally 5–10 minutes. For guests arriving in their own vehicles, there is ample and secure parking on-site.

Its location in the Piesang Valley makes Barrington's an ideal stop after a round of golf at the neighboring championship-class course or an early morning walk along the coast. The tranquility of the valley and proximity to the ocean create a unique atmosphere of seclusion here.

History & Facts

The name of this unique venue is rooted in the mid-19th century. The complex is named after the Honorable Henry Barrington, a charismatic pioneer and owner of the Portland estate in Knysna, who made a significant contribution to the development of agriculture in South Africa. In 1844, he invited the young Newdigate brothers from Kent, who purchased the Roodefontein farm right in the Piesang Valley.

History tells us that the brothers arrived at Central Beach bringing not only Merino sheep but also luxury items like a massive chandelier and a piano. The venue's logo featuring a Merino ram is a tribute to those early settlers whose agricultural achievements laid the foundation for the local community. The land where the complex stands today once belonged to a ward of Barrington.

The creators of the modern Barrington's, Simon Ash and Hilton Nagel, sought to revive this historical spirit by combining heritage craftsmanship with modern sustainability standards. As the town's first craft brewery, the establishment continues the tradition of importing skill and innovation originally set by Henry Barrington himself.

Time Needed

If you plan to stop by for lunch or a beer tasting, expect to spend about 1–3 hours. This is plenty of time to soak in the restaurant's atmosphere at your leisure, sample several craft ales, and stroll through the magnificent kitchen garden.

For those who want the ultimate experience, we recommend staying at the on-site boutique hotel for 1–2 nights. This allows you to spend a romantic evening by the fireplace, enjoy an exquisite smokehouse dinner, and wake up to views of the misty Piesang Valley followed by a slow-paced breakfast on the terrace.

Working Hours

The doors of this welcoming complex are open daily, allowing guests to enjoy the atmosphere of the Piesang Valley from early morning until late evening. Breakfast is served from 08:00 to 11:15, and the main lunch and dinner menu is available from noon until the kitchen closes.

The operating hours are as follows: from Sunday to Thursday, the venue welcomes guests from 08:00 to 21:00. On Friday and Saturday, when the atmosphere becomes more lively, hours are extended until 22:00.
