Imagine the chance to be in the water side-by-side with some of the ocean's most playful inhabitants. Based on the grounds of the Beacon Island Hotel, the center is the only PADI 5-star facility in the area. The main goal of the trip is to reach the Robberg Nature Reserve by boat, home to a massive colony numbering between 6,000 and 8,000 seals. The seals are known for their friendliness and curiosity, often initiating contact with tourists themselves.

This eco-friendly activity is suitable for the whole family: children from age 6 can snorkel, while younger ones can watch the action from the boat. Thanks to high-quality equipment, including warm 5mm wetsuits, participants feel comfortable even in the cool Atlantic water, allowing them to focus entirely on the incredible acrobatics of the marine animals.

What to Do

The highlight of the program is snorkeling surrounded by seals. After a 10-minute boat ride to the Robberg Peninsula, participants enter the water at a depth of about 4–6 meters. For 30 minutes, you can watch hundreds of seals somersault, dive, and swim right up to your mask, demonstrating incredible grace. All participants receive free photos and videos of their adventure taken by the guides.

For those who prefer to stay dry, there is a Seal Viewing option — observing the colony's active life directly from the boat. Options are also available for certified divers, as well as Discover Scuba programs for beginners who want to try scuba diving under the guidance of an experienced instructor.

In addition to the seals, other wildlife is often spotted during the boat trip: cormorants, Cape gannets, and, in season, majestic whales and pods of dolphins. After returning to the center, guests can take advantage of hot showers, changing rooms, and secure lockers for personal belongings. Don't forget to bring your swimsuit, a towel, and sunscreen!

Getting There

The Seal Swimming center is conveniently located in a scenic spot on the grounds of the famous Beacon Island Hotel. If you are staying in Plettenberg Bay, the hotel is easily accessible by taxi or a pleasant walk along the beach.

Upon arriving at the main entrance of the hotel, you should leave your car in the outer parking area. Go through the security gate and follow the signs leading to the left. A pedestrian path will take you past the volleyball courts directly to the dive center's doors. The walk from the parking lot takes no more than a couple of minutes.

The organizers strongly recommend arriving at the meeting point 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time. This time is needed for registration, a safety briefing, and fitting your equipment.

History & Facts

The excursions are organized by ProDive, a true veteran of the tourism industry on the Garden Route. With over 30 years of experience in organizing diving and more than 20 years of conducting seal swims, this center has earned a reputation as one of the most reliable operators in the region.

The center holds the prestigious PADI 5-Star Dive Center status. This means they adhere to the highest standards of safety and service quality, and their equipment is regularly updated to ensure maximum comfort for guests even in the cool ocean waters.

The colony of Cape Fur Seals living in the Robberg Nature Reserve is part of a natural and protected ecosystem. Over decades of interaction with humans, the seals have become accustomed to the presence of boats and divers, perceiving them not as a threat but as objects of curiosity and playmates, making every dive a truly unique wildlife encounter.

Time Needed

The total duration of the adventure is approximately 2.5–3 hours. The boat trip itself and the time spent directly in the water with the animals take about 1.5 hours. However, you should also account for logistics at the center.

This timeframe includes the briefing, fitting of wetsuits, fins, and masks, as well as time for a hot shower and changing after returning to base. If you plan to relax and look through the photos and videos taken during the trip, it is best to set aside a bit more time for your visit.

Working Hours

The center is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00, including weekends. It is important to remember that tours are directly dependent on weather conditions and ocean states, so boat departure times may vary.

To guarantee your spot in a group, it is recommended to book the excursion in advance via the official website or by phone, especially during the peak tourist season.
