This is more than just a hotel; it is a true architectural icon and a major milestone in the development of tourism in South Africa. Its unique design features the country's first multi-story atrium with six tiers of galleries, which fills the building with natural light and the sea breeze. The room interiors are designed with a sophisticated nautical theme, emphasizing the proximity to the elements.

What to Do

A stay here promises a variety of experiences, from quiet nature contemplation to active water sports. Guests can spend time on the pristine white sands of Robberg Beach or swim in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The resort grounds feature both indoor and outdoor pools, allowing for a swim in any weather.

The culinary scene is represented by a constellation of establishments. You can visit the Beacon Café for breakfast, spend a cozy evening at Captain’s Cabin, or enjoy a refreshing cocktail at the panoramic Sea Lounge Bar, which offers breathtaking views of the bay.

For history enthusiasts, a walk through the resort gardens will be a real discovery: artifacts of the past are carefully preserved here, including an ancient whaling cauldron and harpoons. After an eventful day, it’s worth heading to the spa for relaxing treatments that complete the picture of a perfect seaside holiday.

Getting There

The journey to this iconic landmark usually follows the famous Garden Route. The main transport artery is the N2 highway. If you are driving from Cape Town, the trip takes about 7 hours (approximately 600 km), while the journey from Durban is about 450 km. A car remains the most convenient way to travel, allowing you to enjoy the coastal scenery.

For those preferring air travel, the nearest airport is Plettenberg Bay Airport, located just 10 km away (about a 15-minute drive). George Airport, a larger hub, is 90 km away, and the drive from there takes about an hour and a half.

Within the town, you can easily use taxi services or book a transfer directly to the resort doors. Public transport is limited in this part of the country, so tourists most often opt for rental cars or local shuttle services from the central districts.

History & Facts

The history of this site began long before the first tourists arrived. In 1771, the first navigation beacon, crafted from precious stinkwood, was erected on the island at the mouth of the Piesang River to help sailors navigate the bay. A century later, in 1881, it was replaced by a stone structure, fragments of which can still be seen in the hotel gardens today.

In the 19th century, life here was very different — from 1834, the bay served as a base for whaling. Later, in 1908, the Norwegian Thesen family transformed the site into a full-scale whaling station with a factory and a manager's house. However, due to the decline in the whale population and external factors, operations ceased in 1916, leaving behind only historical artifacts.

The modern chapter of the resort began in 1972. Renowned hotelier Sol Kerzner and architect André Hoff created a unique building with a six-tier atrium that became an architectural landmark on the coast. In 2022, the complex celebrated its 50th anniversary, solidifying its status as a legend of tourism in South Africa.

Time Needed

For those stopping by just to admire the architecture and historical monuments, 2–4 hours will be sufficient. This provides enough time to see the old lighthouse in the garden, explore the whaling artifacts, and enjoy a cup of coffee with an ocean view.

However, to truly soak in the "island life" atmosphere, it is worth staying for 1–2 days. This allows you to visit the spa, dine in the panoramic restaurants, and spend time on the beaches that surround the resort on all sides without any rush.

Working Hours

The Beacon Island Resort welcomes guests and visitors 24/7. The doors of the complex are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing you to arrive at any time that suits you.

While restaurants and the spa may have their own operating hours, access to the resort grounds and the main observation decks is available continuously from Monday to Sunday.
