The 9-hole course (played as 18 tees) has a par 72 rating and is fully open to nature: there are no fences separating players from the African savannah. This means that while taking a swing, your audience might include giraffes, elephants, warthogs, or even antelopes, making every round absolutely unpredictable and thrilling.

The club is situated on the southern bank of the Sabie River, providing players with picturesque views of the African bush. This spot is highly valued by tourists for the opportunity to connect with nature in its pristine form without sacrificing comfort and high-quality sporting service.

What to Do

The main reason to visit is to play golf in absolute harmony with wildlife. Here, you can test your skills on a course surrounded by authentic African bush. Spotting large animals right during a round is a common occurrence, so don't forget your camera to capture elephants or giraffes against the green fairway.

For competitive players, the annual 'Joke Tournament' held in early May is a major event. This large-scale competition lasts several days and attracts golf enthusiasts from across the country, creating a unique safari-style festive atmosphere.

If you aren't planning a full game, stop by the clubhouse, built in 1989. It's a great place to enjoy refreshments and watch birds—the club's grounds are famous for their vast variety of avian species. There is also a practice area available for visitors to hone their swing before heading out onto the main course.

Getting There

The easiest way to reach this unique sporting venue is via Skukuza Airport (SZK), which handles regular domestic flights. From the airport terminal, you can take a taxi or arrange a park transfer; the journey takes only 5–10 minutes.

If you prefer traveling by car, you must enter Kruger National Park through the Paul Kruger Gate or Malelane Gate. Then, follow the signs along the H1-1 road towards the Skukuza administrative center. Keep in mind that renting a car for self-driving within the park is essential, and travel is only permitted during daylight hours.

For those not planning to rent a car, there are organized safari tours from major cities like Johannesburg, which often include a visit to the golf club in their itinerary. Within the park itself, you can also use SANParks shuttles or excursion vehicles.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in the early 1970s when a group of enthusiasts led by Nick de Beer and Jan Viljoen started playing golf on a makeshift course right in the middle of the wild. The official birth date of the club is considered June 12, 1971, when the first six players took to the course under the name Toulon Golf Club.

In the early years, conditions were truly rugged: instead of a proper club building, a simple tent stretched over bushes was used. The area expanded gradually, sometimes by chance—clearing land for water pipes allowed for an increased playing zone. In 1984, an automatic irrigation system was installed, significantly improving the quality of the greens.

The modern clubhouse was built in 1989 through the efforts of club members and support from sponsors. For a long time, the club was a private retreat only for park staff and their guests, and it wasn't until November 15, 1999, that it opened its doors to the general public, becoming one of the most unique attractions in South Africa.

Time Needed

For a standard 9-hole round of golf (played as 18 tees), most players need between 2 to 4 hours. This time can vary depending on how busy the course is and how often you'll want to pause to photograph animals passing by.

We recommend setting aside half a day for your visit. This will allow you to not only enjoy the game but also spend time at the practice range, relax in the cozy clubhouse overlooking the bush, or simply observe the reserve's rare birds and fauna in a peaceful setting.

Working Hours

The golf club doors are open to visitors daily, allowing you to enjoy a game in the morning or pre-sunset sun. The club's schedule accounts for the daylight hours in the reserve:

From Monday to Saturday, the club is open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. On Sunday, the hours are slightly shorter—from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Please note that park entry rules may restrict movement in the evening, so plan your visit to ensure you return to camp before the gates close.
