Bakubung Gate Pilanesberg National Park

About

Bakubung Gate serves as one of the main entrances to Pilanesberg National Park—an amazing nature reserve located in close proximity to the famous Sun City resort. This unique destination in South Africa is the country's fourth-largest park, sprawling across an area of 50,000 hectares.

The park's primary geographical feature is that it is situated within the crater of an extinct volcano. The territory is surrounded by three concentric rings of hills, which create a unique landscape. Thanks to its location in the transition zone between the arid Kalahari Desert and the moist Bushveld savannas, an incredible ecosystem has formed here with a rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Travelers appreciate Pilanesberg for its picturesque views: from endless grasslands to forested valleys and pristine lakes. Despite its proximity to civilization, the park maintains an atmosphere of wild Africa, remaining one of the most accessible yet impressive reserves in the region, requiring less travel time than the famous Kruger National Park.

What to Do

Entering the park through Bakubung Gate provides access to more than 200 kilometers of well-maintained roads designed for safaris. Here, you can set off on your own or as part of a group with an experienced guide to search for the famous "Big Five": lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. Besides these, graceful giraffes, hippos, and numerous species of antelope are frequently caught on camera.

For birdwatching enthusiasts, the park offers exceptional opportunities—over 300 species of birds have been recorded here. For the convenience of visitors, special hides and observation decks are available, and a separate walking trail is laid out at Manyane Lodge for studying the habits of local sky dwellers.

It is definitely worth driving to the central part of the park, where the Mankwe Dam is located at the foot of Thabayadiotso Mountain. This picturesque lake is an ideal spot for landscape photography and observing animals coming to the waterhole. Well-equipped picnic areas are also provided throughout the reserve, where it is safe to step out of your vehicle and spend time surrounded by wildlife.

Getting There

The most convenient way to reach the park is by rental car from Pretoria or Johannesburg—the journey takes approximately 2–3 hours on high-quality highways. Bakubung Gate is located just a few kilometers from the Sun City entertainment complex, making it extremely accessible for those staying at the resort.

For those who prefer flying, Pilanesberg Airport is located in the immediate vicinity. Many elite safari lodges within the park provide their guests with private transfers directly from the terminal.

Public transport to the park gates is virtually non-existent, so a taxi from the city center or booking an organized guided tour remains the most preferred option for tourists without their own vehicle. Remember that you will need a car to explore the park territory independently, as walking outside of specially designated areas is prohibited.

History & Facts

The history of this land began incredibly long ago—about 1.2 billion years ago, when powerful volcanic activity raged here. Today's Pilanesberg is nothing less than the crater of a long-extinct volcano. Its geological structure, known as a "ring complex," is considered one of the most remarkable in the world due to its rare rock types and unique mineral formations.

In more recent times, these picturesque areas were used for cattle ranching. However, in the late 1970s, the government made a bold decision to create a 50,000-hectare national park here. The project received the support of the Bakgatla tribe leader—Tshidmane Pilane—who agreed to include his people's mountainous territories into the reserve in exchange for the development of a new town for the community.

Following the official founding of the park, one of the largest wildlife reintroduction operations in history was carried out. Thousands of animals were relocated here from various parts of South Africa to restore the biodiversity that had been lost during the farming years. Today, Pilanesberg serves as a shining example of how humans can successfully restore a pristine ecosystem.

Time Needed

To get even a general sense of the reserve's scale and see the main representatives of African fauna, it is recommended to set aside at least one full day (about 8–10 hours). It is best to start your safari as soon as the gates open, when predators are still active and the heat hasn't yet forced animals to hide in the shade.

For a deeper acquaintance with the park and to increase your chances of encountering the entire "Big Five," it is better to allow 2–3 days. Staying overnight in one of the luxury safari lodges inside the park will allow you to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the African night and head out on an excursion at dawn, just as nature is waking up.

Working Hours

Operating hours for the entrance gates to Pilanesberg National Park may change depending on the season and daylight hours. Generally, the gates open with the first rays of the sun and close at dusk to ensure the safety of visitors and the peace of the savanna's inhabitants.

Before your trip, it is strongly recommended to check the current operating hours on the park's official website or inquire at the reception desk in Sun City, as entry rules may be adjusted by the administration.
