The climate in Jaffna can be characterized as hot and tropical, with high air temperatures throughout the year. Thanks to its geographical location, there are no sharp seasonal cold spells here: the weather delights travellers with consistent warmth. The average air temperature fluctuates within a comfortable range of +26°C to +30°C, making this region of northern Sri Lanka an attractive destination for lovers of sun and heat.

The influence of monsoons is clearly traceable in Jaffna's weather patterns, dividing the year into dry and wet periods. The hottest months are usually April, May, and June, when the thermometer reaches its peak values. During this time, as well as at the beginning of the year (especially in February and March), clear weather with minimal rainfall prevails, which is ideal for excursions and beach holidays.

The main rainy season falls at the end of the year — from October to December. During these months, the number of cloudy days and rainfall increases noticeably, bringing necessary moisture and freshness to the region. However, even during this period, rains are often short-lived, giving way to clear skies, allowing tourists to enjoy their trip despite nature's whims.

The weather in Jaffna delights travellers with warmth all year round, so the concept of cold in the usual sense is practically non-existent here. The temperature pattern is stable: even in the "coolest" months, such as December and January, the average temperature holds at a comfortable mark of about 26°C. The hottest period is traditionally the spring months, especially April and May, when the air warms up to an average of 29.5°C, and daily maximums often exceed 31°C.

The summer season in this region of Sri Lanka is characterized by steady heat. From May to September, thermometer readings rarely drop below 28–29°C, creating an atmosphere of true tropical heat. The winter period (from December to February) feels like a mild and pleasant summer: the exhausting heat recedes, giving way to more comfortable conditions for excursions and walks, while the temperature remains high enough for a beach holiday.

A characteristic feature of Jaffna's climate is the minimal temperature difference throughout the day. The difference between daily maximums and nightly minimums is quite small, amounting to just 2–3 degrees. Nights here are truly warm and humid: even in the coolest months, the night temperature does not drop below 24.7°C, and at the height of the heat, it stays at around 28°C, so tourists certainly won't need warm clothes here.

Precipitation in Jaffna is distributed unevenly throughout the year, allowing for a clear distinction between the dry season and the rainy season. If your goal is to avoid bad weather, plan your trip for the beginning of the year. The driest months are February and March, when rainfall levels are minimal, and the number of rainy days does not exceed 4–5 per month. March stands out in particular, when the probability of getting caught in the rain is practically zero.

The wettest period falls at the end of the year. From October to December, the frequency of rains increases sharply. The peak of precipitation is observed in November: the highest volume of moisture is recorded in this month (about 13 mm according to statistics), and it can rain for up to 25 days. At this time of year, downpours become a frequent occurrence, so travellers should take care of waterproof clothing and umbrellas in advance.

In the middle of the year, from April to September, the weather is variable. Although the volume of precipitation remains small (on average 1–3 mm), the number of days with precipitation gradually increases, reaching 16 days in September. However, unlike the autumn rainy season, these rains are most often short-lived and refreshing, not creating serious obstacles for sightseeing in Sri Lanka.

Given the consistently hot climate of Jaffna, where the average temperature throughout the year holds at +26...+29°C, the basis of your wardrobe should be clothing made from light natural fabrics. Give preference to cotton, linen, or viscose in light colours, which are breathable and protect against overheating. The sun here is very active, so be sure to pack a wide-brimmed hat, quality sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen. Comfortable, broken-in open shoes or light sneakers are best suited for long walks around the city and excursions.

If your trip falls during the period from October to December, it is worth preparing for a high probability of precipitation: in November, the number of rainy days can reach 25. At this time, a compact umbrella or a light rain poncho will become your best friends. In the period from January to September, rains happen less frequently and are usually short-lived, but keeping a waterproof case for your electronics is still recommended.

Do not forget about the cultural features of the region when packing your suitcase. There are many temples and sacred places in Jaffna, visiting which requires observing a dress code: clothes must cover shoulders and knees. It is convenient for women to take a wide light scarf or pareo to cover up before entering a shrine if necessary. Evenings remain comfortable (about +25...+27°C), so you are unlikely to need warm clothes, but a long-sleeved shirt will come in handy for protection against insects.
