The climate of Damascus can be characterised as semi-arid with a noticeable Mediterranean influence. The weather here features distinct seasons, offering travellers diverse conditions depending on the time of year. Generally, the region is characterised by an abundance of sunny days; however, one should be prepared for noticeable temperature contrasts between the hot summer and the cool winter.

The summer months, especially July and August, bring heat and aridity to the city: the average daytime temperature often exceeds 33°C, and rain during this period is an exceptional rarity. Winter, conversely, can be cool and damp. In January and February, the air cools to an average of 5–6°C, and these months account for the highest number of overcast days with precipitation, creating an atmosphere conducive to visiting museums and cosy cafes.

Spring and autumn are considered the most comfortable times to visit. In April and May, as well as in October, mild and pleasant weather sets in with temperatures ranging from 14°C to 19°C, ideally suited for long walks and sightseeing. An important feature of the local climate is the low humidity, thanks to which even the summer heat is tolerated relatively easily, although evenings can bring freshness and cool air.

Precipitation is practically absent at this time, making the air dry. Despite high daytime temperatures, the heat is relatively easy to bear thanks to low humidity; however, sun protection and headwear will be mandatory companions for the tourist.

An important feature of the weather in Damascus is the significant fluctuation between day and night temperatures. Even in the height of summer, a hot day is followed by pleasant coolness: at night, the thermometer can drop to 17-18°C, ensuring comfortable sleep. Spring and autumn, especially April, May, and October, delight with the most balanced weather with daytime readings from 21°C to 26°C, perfectly suited for long strolls.

Precipitation in Damascus is distributed unevenly throughout the year, clearly delineating the boundaries between the wet winter season and the arid summer period. Travellers should take into account that the city is influenced by a semi-arid climate, so even during the "wet" months, rains are rarely heavy downpours, manifesting more often as moderate precipitation.

Winter is undoubtedly the wettest time of the year. The peak of inclement weather falls in January, when statistics record about 11 rainy days. In February and March, the number of days with precipitation remains high (about 9 days), but by April the sky clears more frequently. Given that winter nighttime temperatures can drop to low values, during the coldest periods, not only rain is possible, but also brief snow or drizzle.

Summer and early autumn in the capital of Syria are a time of absolute drought. From June to September, the probability of precipitation is reduced to a minimum. July and August are the driest months of the year with a figure of 0 rainy days. Only by November does the weather begin to change, bringing about 5 days with precipitation and preparing the city for the winter season.

When planning a trip to Damascus in the summer period, give preference to light and loose clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. From June to September, the weather is hot and dry, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 30°C and practically no rain. Be sure to bring reliable sun protection: a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and high-SPF cream. Since you will be doing a lot of walking along ancient streets, comfortable and proven flat-soled shoes will become your main companion.

Winter in the Syrian capital is cool and can be rainy, especially in January and February, when night temperatures drop to +1...+2°C. For a trip at this time of year, you will need a warm jacket, a thick sweater, and waterproof shoes. An umbrella or a compact raincoat will also not go amiss, as the number of wet days increases in winter. In the off-season, during spring and autumn, it is best to use the layering principle: combine T-shirts with cardigans or light windbreakers to feel comfortable when the daytime warmth changes to evening coolness.
