General Weather Overview

The climate in the city of Tunis can be characterised as Mediterranean, with distinct seasons. Summer here is hot and predominantly dry, while winter is distinguished by its mildness and low amount of rainfall. This makes Tunis an attractive destination for those seeking sunny warmth and comfortable weather for strolling and exploration.

The summer months, especially from June to August, delight with high temperatures, when the average maximum can exceed 30-33°C, and rainfall is practically non-existent. July is the driest month. Winter, from December to February, brings cooler weather with average temperatures around 12-14°C and a slight increase in the number of rainy days, although the total amount of precipitation remains low. Spring and autumn are pleasant transitional periods with moderate temperatures and little rainfall, ideally suitable for visiting the city.

Temperature

In the city of Tunis, a distinct shift in temperature seasons is observed throughout the year. The hottest months are July and August. During this period, the average air temperature is around 28.3°C - 28.4°C, with daytime highs regularly rising to 33.5°C - 33.8°C. The coolest months are considered to be January and February, when the average temperature holds at a level of 12.4°C - 12.9°C, and average minimum night temperatures drop to 8.8°C - 8.9°C.

The summer period in Tunis, from June to August, is characterised by consistently hot weather. June already brings significant warmth with an average temperature of 25.1°C and maximum values reaching 30.3°C. July and August are the peak of summer, when the daytime heat can be quite noticeable. However, as a rule, this is a dry heat, which makes it somewhat easier to tolerate. Nights in the summer months remain warm, with average minimum temperatures of 19.9°C in June and up to 22.8°C - 23.3°C in July-August.

Winter in Tunis, covering December, January, and February, is distinguished by mildness and coolness. Average daytime temperatures in these months range from 16.0°C (in January) to 17.3°C (in December). At night, the temperature drops on average to 8.8°C - 10.3°C, making evenings and early morning hours fresh, but without severe frosts. The climate of Tunis is characterised by noticeable daily temperature fluctuations: in summer, the difference between the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum can be around 10-11°C (for example, in July: 33.8°C max and 22.8°C min). In winter, these fluctuations are somewhat smaller but still perceptible – around 7-8°C (for example, in January: 16.0°C max and 8.9°C min).

Precipitation

In Tunis, there is a fairly clear division into wetter and drier seasons, although the total amount of precipitation throughout the year remains low. The greatest amount of precipitation, albeit insignificant, falls in the autumn-winter period and early spring. The months with the highest average rainfall are March, October, and December, when 2 mm of precipitation falls. However, even in these months, the number of rainy days remains moderate: 8 days in March, 7 days in October, and 9 days in December and November.

The summer months, conversely, are characterised as extremely dry. June and July are the most arid, with zero rainfall. In July, according to data, there are no rainy days at all, and in June there are only two. August is also very dry, with 0 mm of precipitation, but with a slight increase in the number of days with precipitation to four. September marks a gradual transition to a wetter period, with 1 mm of precipitation and 4 rainy days.

Overall, precipitation in Tunis takes the form of short rains rather than prolonged downpours, given the low monthly averages. Even in the "wettest" months, such as November and December (9 rainy days each), precipitation is distributed in such a way that its total amount is small (1-2 mm). Snow is an extremely rare phenomenon for Tunis, and the provided data indicate predominantly rain precipitation.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Tunis, it is important to choose the right wardrobe to feel comfortable in any weather. In summer, especially from June to August, when the average maximum temperature rises above 30-33°C and precipitation is practically absent, you will need light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Do not forget a hat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen for protection against the active sun. Comfortable sandals or light closed shoes for walking will be very handy.

The winter months (December-February) in Tunis are mild, with an average temperature of about 12-14°C and a small amount of precipitation (on average 1-2 mm, but up to 9 rainy days per month). At this time of year, layered clothing will be useful: T-shirts, jumpers or fleece jackets, as well as a light jacket or raincoat. A small umbrella or raincoat would also be useful in case of rare rains. For the transitional seasons (spring and autumn), the principle of layering is also relevant, as the weather can be changeable. Comfortable closed shoes for long walks around the city will be your best companion at any time of the year.
