General Weather Overview

The weather in Simferopol is characterised by a moderate nature with a noticeable influence of the steppe climate and the proximity of mountains. All seasons are clearly defined here, yet thanks to the southern location, extreme cold is a rarity. The city often welcomes travellers with sunny days, making it a comfortable transit point or destination practically year-round.

Summer here is hot and long: in July and August, the air warms up to +28...29°C, and the amount of precipitation noticeably decreases. Winter, conversely, is mild and humid, with frequent thaws; the average temperature in January stays just above zero, although slight night frosts are possible. Early autumn gives the city a special charm: September delights with comfortable warmth (about +18°C) and is one of the driest months of the year, ideally suited for leisurely walks.

Temperature

The climate in Simferopol is distinguished by its moderate character with a mild winter and a hot, long summer. The annual temperature range is quite wide: January is traditionally the coldest month with an average minimum of about -1.6°C, while August becomes the hottest period when daytime figures reach an average of 28.9°C. Such dynamics ensure a clear change of seasons, allowing tourists to choose the optimal time for a visit depending on their preferences.

The summer season here is truly warm and sunny. Already in June, the air warms up during the day to a comfortable 25.7°C, and in July and August, stable heat sets in. It is worth noting the noticeable difference between day and night temperatures: even in the height of summer, when it can be around 29°C during the day, nights bring pleasant coolness, dropping to 17-18°C. This allows one to comfortably endure the daytime heat and enjoy evening strolls.

Winter in the city passes without extreme frosts, remaining predominantly mild. The average temperature in December and February stays in the positive range, and daytime highs even in the coldest months often reach 5-6°C. Spring and autumn serve as smooth transitional periods: in May, almost summer-like weather sets in with highs around 20°C, and September delights with warmth, maintaining an average temperature at the level of 18.3°C.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Simferopol is distributed quite evenly throughout the year, however, periods of high humidity and a drier season can be distinguished. In winter, especially in January and February, the weather is often overcast. Given that temperatures in these months can drop below zero (average minimum in January is about -1.6°C), precipitation often falls as snow or sleet, although rain is also not uncommon. January is one of the "wettest" months in terms of precipitation frequency, counting about 12 days of bad weather.

By the beginning of summer, the nature of precipitation changes. June stands out against other warm months: despite the high temperature (averaging up to 25.7°C during the day), the number of days with precipitation rises again to 12. During this period, rains are often short-term downpours and can be accompanied by thunderstorms, quickly refreshing the air after the daytime heat.

The most favourable time for those who prefer dry weather is the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. August and September are considered the driest months of the year: the number of rainy days decreases to 5–6 per month. This time is ideal for long walks and excursions, as the probability of getting wet is minimal.

What to Pack

When packing for Simferopol, it is worth considering the features of the moderate continental climate. Summer here is usually warm and sunny, with the average temperature staying around +23°C, but during the day the air often warms up to +28°C and above. For a trip in the season from June to August, light clothing made of natural breathable fabrics, sunglasses, and headwear will be ideal. Don't forget sunscreen, as the sun in these months can be quite active.

Winter in the city is generally mild, severe frosts happen rarely, however due to humidity, the temperature may feel lower than the actual thermometer readings. In the period from December to February, a warm windproof jacket, hat, and scarf will be useful. For the shoulder seasons, in spring and autumn, the best solution will be the layering principle: the weather is changeable, and the ability to take off or put on a jumper depending on the temperature will be very handy.

Light precipitation is possible at any time of the year, so a compact umbrella or a light raincoat won't take up much space in your luggage but can help out on a cloudy day. Since exploring the city often involves walking routes, pay special attention to footwear: it should be as comfortable as possible, broken in, and suitable for long walks through city streets and parks.
