The history of Carlisle Central Station dates back to 1847. The building was designed by the renowned architect William Tite in an impressive Neo-Tudor style to harmonise with the neighbouring historic Citadel. Initially, the station was built as a joint station for several railway companies, highlighting the strategic importance of the city as a transport hub.
Over its history, the station has undergone several renovations but has retained its unique historic appearance, including the magnificent glass roof over the platforms. Today, this building is listed as a Grade II* architectural heritage site, remaining one of the most beautiful railway stations in the United Kingdom.
