The history of this place began in 1969, when its founder, Gene Dayton, decided to lay the first trails. In those days, Gene used a rather unusual method: he packed down the snow by hand while dragging an old car tire behind him on skis. His goal was to create an accessible environment for skiers with disabilities, which later evolved into the large-scale Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center program.

The center's first base was a tiny 19th-century miner's cabin known as the Hallelujah Hut. Later, in 1980, Gene purchased an old ski patrol building for a symbolic $1. Along with volunteers, he dismantled it into 73,000 pieces, moved it to a new location, and reassembled it. This building faithfully served the center for over 30 years, preserving the spirit of old Colorado.

The modern appearance of the center took shape thanks to the Dayton family's ecological approach. In 2006, when local forests were devastated by a mountain pine beetle infestation, the family decided to use the dead trees for construction. They acquired specialized equipment and built the magnificent Oh, Be Joyful Lodge themselves, which opened its doors in 2013. Today, more than 50 years later, the center remains a family-run business managed by Gene, his wife Therese, and their son Josh.

To fully enjoy everything the center has to offer, it is recommended to set aside 3 to 6 hours for your visit. Beginners usually find a couple of hours sufficient for an introductory lesson and a short trip along the practice trails, followed by some relaxing time in the cozy lodge.

Experienced athletes and nature lovers can easily spend an entire day here. The 1,400-acre territory offers enough trails to explore new paths from morning to evening, with breaks for lunch by the fireplace or an exciting snowcat tour.

The center welcomes guests daily during the winter season, which typically runs from mid-November to mid-April. The complex is open from 09:00 to 17:00 seven days a week.

Please note that the festive atmosphere in the lodge peaks toward the evening: Happy Hour at the bar takes place from 15:00 to 17:00, and live music is featured on Fridays until 18:00.
