The museum's first steps were modest: in 1980, an interactive antique exhibit opened within another institution—the Sloan Museum. However, the project's popularity grew so quickly that by 1986, with the support of grants and the local community, the museum found its first permanent home in the NorthBank Center, where it operated successfully for seven years.

A major milestone came in 1990 when an anonymous donor established the Mary Newman Endowment, which today exceeds one million dollars and ensures the museum's stable development. The museum moved to its current building on University Avenue in 1993, becoming an integral part of the city's cultural corridor and welcoming more than 40,000 young guests annually.
