How to get to Mojave

Mojave is an atmospheric settlement located in the desert region of California, known for its aerospace port and rugged landscapes. To get to Mojave, travellers most often use combined routes via neighbouring major transport hubs, as the town is located away from the main tourist trails. You can get here by flying to neighbouring cities and continuing the journey by rental car or bus, enjoying views of the vast expanses of the USA.

There are no direct passenger flights to the town itself, as the local airfield is focused mainly on testing and cargo transport. It is most convenient to fly to the nearest civil aviation hubs, for example, to Bakersfield (85 km) or Victorville (98 km).

These airports receive flights from many major cities and are well connected to the region's road network. After landing, the journey to the final destination will take very little time, allowing you to smoothly switch from the rhythm of city life to the tranquillity of the Mojave desert.

Railway connections directly to Mojave for passengers are limited, and there is no operating station in the town for regular long-distance trains. The nearest major stations are in neighbouring towns, from where you will have to continue the journey by another mode of transport.

The optimal option would be a trip to the station in the city of Bakersfield or Victorville. From there, you can easily organise a transfer or rent a car to cover the remaining kilometres through the picturesque terrain.

Bus services connect this desert region with neighbouring cities, offering an affordable way to travel. The fastest route runs from the city of Bakersfield: the bus covers the distance of 85 km in approximately 1 hour 50 minutes.

Trips are also available from the city of Victorville, however, the journey here will take more time — about 3.5–4 hours for 170 km of travel. This is an excellent opportunity to leisurely observe the changing landscapes of California from the window of comfortable transport.

Travelling by car is, perhaps, the most flexible way to get to Mojave, allowing you to independently plan stops along the way. A trip from the city of Bakersfield will take just about 1 hour, as the distance is less than 100 km along a good highway.

If you are departing from the city of Victorville, expect to spend approximately 1 hour 20 minutes on the road. The roads in this region are usually clear and offer the driver mesmerising views of the desert horizons.

A trip to the desert region requires special preparation so that the harsh climate does not spoil your travel experience. Here are a few recommendations that will help make your visit to Mojave comfortable and safe.

1. Clothing and belongings. The desert climate is variable: it can be hot during the day and cold at night. Dress in layers and be sure to bring a windbreaker, as strong winds often blow here.
2. Transport. Public transport within the town is not well developed. It is highly recommended to rent a car for freedom of movement.
3. Finances. The official currency is the US Dollar. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but having some cash for small purchases at petrol stations or roadside cafes is always useful.
4. Health and safety. The air here is very dry. Always keep a supply of drinking water and use sunscreen even in cloudy weather.
5. Communication. The main language is English. Locals are used to tourists and are usually friendly, but knowing basic phrases will be a plus.
6. What to avoid. Do not enter fenced areas of the aerospace port and private properties without permission — this may lead to legal issues.
7. Refuelling the car. Monitor the fuel level in your tank. Distances between petrol stations in the desert can be significant.
8. Additional tip. Mojave is known for its aircraft boneyard and aerospace activity. Take binoculars to observe the machinery from afar.
