The winery spans about 200 acres of fertile land divided into three unique blocks: Home Ranch for classic Bordeaux varieties, Evan’s Ranch in a cool-climate area, and Rancho Esperanza. They adhere to sustainable farming principles, using organic vine care methods to produce 100% estate wines that reflect the local terroir's character.

Visitors are welcomed by a cozy tasting room designed in an elegant Spanish Colonial style. Surrounded by rolling hills and neat rows of vineyards, Gainey Vineyard offers guests not only exceptional drinks but also an atmosphere of serenity, complemented by the historic charm of a barn dating back to the 1890s.

What to Do

The main highlight for visitors to Santa Ynez is a tasting at the bar or on the outdoor terrace with panoramic vineyard views. Here, you can sample rare limited-edition wines, including bold Cabernet Sauvignons and elegant Pinot Noirs from the Sta. Rita Hills sub-region. A special treat is enjoying a glass of wine on the ranch's expansive lawns, soaking in the California sunshine.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy walks through the estate. You can see the historic 1890s barn, where you might even spot a local owl keeping watch over the winery. This spot is perfect for leisurely picnics on the patio or hosting celebrations against the backdrop of the rolling landscapes surrounding the facility.

Getting There

The easiest way to reach the winery is by car. It is located at 3950 CA-246, just a few minutes' drive from downtown Santa Ynez. The drive from Santa Barbara takes about 45 minutes via the scenic US-101 and CA-154 highways, while the neighboring charming town of Solvang is only 10 minutes away.

History & Facts

The story of this place began in 1963, when the Gainey family purchased 1,800 acres of undeveloped land in Santa Ynez. Initially, they raised horses and grew vegetables, but a passion for high-quality produce soon led the owners to the art of winemaking. In 1984, Dan J. Gainey, inspired by European traditions, planted the first 50 acres of Bordeaux grape varieties.

As winemaking pioneers in Santa Barbara County, the Gainey family continuously expanded their holdings. In 1997, they were among the first to recognize the potential of the cool climate in the Sta. Rita Hills, establishing the Evan’s Ranch vineyard even before the region was officially recognized as an AVA. This visionary approach allowed the winery to secure a leading position in the premium wine market.

Today, the business is managed by the third and fourth generations of the family, maintaining continuity and 40 years of winemaking expertise. Gainey Vineyard remains a symbol of hard work and love for the California land, successfully blending farming heritage with modern production technologies.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the tasting and explore the estate grounds, it is recommended to set aside 1.5 to 2.5 hours. This is plenty of time for a relaxed introduction to the wine list, chatting with a sommelier, and a short stroll among the vines.

If you plan to take a full ranch tour or settle in for a long outdoor picnic, it's worth allocating about 3 hours. The winery's atmosphere encourages you not to rush and to savor every moment surrounded by nature.

Working Hours

You can visit Gainey Vineyard daily; the tasting room is typically open to guests from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This makes it easy to fit a visit into a wine tour of the valley on both weekdays and weekends.

However, before your trip, we recommend checking the official website of the winery or calling to confirm holiday hours or the possibility of private events, which may limit access to the grounds at certain times.
