Founded in 2013 by Chef Luca Crestanelli from Verona, the restaurant practices a "farm-to-table" philosophy. Here, every ingredient matters: fresh fish from local fishermen, meat from surrounding ranches, and vegetables grown on the fertile lands of the Central Coast are transformed into vibrant seasonal masterpieces. The interior combines modern comfort with elements of an old farm, creating an atmosphere where every guest feels at home.

S.Y. Kitchen is famous not only for its cuisine but also for its exceptional attention to detail. The Courtyard allows for al fresco dining, while the bar, led by talented mixologists, offers innovative cocktails that perfectly complement the meal. With a rating of 4.7, this spot is deservedly considered a must-visit for all connoisseurs of quality food and hospitality.

What to Do

The main reason to visit S.Y. Kitchen is, undoubtedly, to sample the seasonal Italian menu. Be sure to try the homemade pasta, handcrafted daily by the chef's brother, Francesco. Orecchiette with short rib ragu or classic spaghetti with clams offer a truly delightful experience. Appetizer lovers should look out for the delicate burrata with tomatoes or fried artichokes with a truffle accent.

Beyond the food, the restaurant offers an excellent bar experience. Spend some time at the counter watching mixologist Alberto Battaglini, whose craft cocktails are considered some of the best in the region. If you prefer wine, the local list offers the best selections from both the California Central Coast and classic regions of Italy.

For those who appreciate atmosphere, a table in The Courtyard is the perfect choice — a cozy patio where you can dine under the warm California sky. And if your visit falls on a Sunday, don't miss the chance to stop by for Italian brunch, featuring special dishes like homemade sausage with sweet potatoes. This place is ideal for a romantic date, a family celebration, or simply a pleasant evening with loved ones.

Getting There

S.Y. Kitchen is located at 1110 Faraday St in the heart of the charming town of Santa Ynez. The restaurant is just a couple of blocks from the CA-246 highway, making it easily accessible for travelers exploring the valley.

If you are driving from Santa Barbara or Los Olivos, the drive along the scenic CA-154 or CA-246 roads will take about 30–40 minutes. In this small town, parking is usually not an issue — you can leave your car directly near the restaurant or on the adjacent streets.

Public transportation in this area is limited, so the most convenient way to get there is by private car or taxi (Uber and Lyft services also operate in the region). The area is very safe and ideal for walking between local wineries and hotels.

History & Facts

The story of S.Y. Kitchen began in April 2013, when Chef Luca Crestanelli decided to fulfill his dream of opening his own restaurant in California. Luca grew up in Verona, Italy, where he developed a passion for authentic cuisine and received his professional culinary education. After moving to the USA in 2002, he worked at renowned Los Angeles establishments for a long time before finding the perfect spot in the Santa Ynez Valley.

The idea for the restaurant emerged in partnership with Mike and Kathy Gordon, owners of the legendary Toscana in Brentwood. Living in the valley, the Gordons supported Luca's vision: to create a place with a rustic Italian style that would make the most of the abundance of local farm products. The old farmhouse where the restaurant opened was the perfect fit for creating a warm, "home-like" atmosphere.

Since its opening, S.Y. Kitchen has quickly earned a reputation as one of the region's top dining destinations. Luca was joined by his brother Francesco, who took charge of the craft of making fresh pasta and exquisite desserts. Today, the restaurant is considered a benchmark for the "farm-to-table" approach, proving that simplicity and quality of ingredients are the keys to true culinary success.

Time Needed

A visit to S.Y. Kitchen is more than just a meal; it is a full gastronomic ritual, so we recommend allowing 2 to 3 hours for your visit. This is enough time to leisurely enjoy an aperitif at the bar, savor main courses from the seasonal menu, and finish the meal with a homemade dessert and a cup of aromatic coffee.

If you plan to stop by for a quick lunch on a weekday, you can manage in about 1–1.5 hours. However, the restaurant's relaxed atmosphere and cozy terraces often encourage a longer, more thoughtful stay with friends or family.
