Airport Signs
Your first time at a foreign airport can be memorable, especially if your English isn’t great. Some ‘arrivals’ and ‘customs’, and what they say over the loudspeaker is completely unintelligible. That’s why we’re here to help you understand the signs — knowing them, you won’t wander around the airport building like a scared kitten.
Aisle seat (Window seat) — a seat next to the aisle or the window
Arrivals — the area for incoming flights, mainly for those meeting passengers
Baggage / luggage — suitcases and bags containing your belongings
Baggage belt — the conveyor belt where you collect your luggage
Baggage / luggage cart (trolley) — a cart for your luggage, useful if you have a lot of bags and suitcases
Baggage claim — the area where you collect your luggage
Bag drop counter (bag drop desk) — a desk where you can drop off your checked baggage
Boarding — the process of getting onto the plane
Boarding gate (departure gate) — the gate where you board your flight
Boarding pass — a boarding pass issued at check-in that allows you to board the plane
Check-in — the registration process before your flight
Customs — the customs area where you must declare imported items if they exceed limits
Delayed — indicates that a flight is running late
Departures — the area for departing passengers who are flying out
Final call — the last announcement for passengers to board
Flight information monitors — screens showing flight details and schedule changes; check them often
Hand baggage / luggage (carry-on) — bags you can take into the cabin with you
On time — indicates the flight is operating on schedule; mostly useful for those meeting passengers
Lost & Found — the office to contact if your luggage or belongings are lost
Oversized baggage counter — the desk where you check in oversized baggage
Self check-in counters (self-service check-in kiosks) –
automated kiosks where you can check in yourself. If you’re nervous about speaking English at the counter, use these machines.
Security check — the security screening area where you and your carry-on are checked for prohibited items
Waiting lounge — a seating area where you can wait for your flight
