About

AirAsia is one of the most recognizable brands in the world of aviation, deservedly considered the largest low-cost airline in Asia. Since its inception, the carrier has adhered to the ambitious motto "Now Everyone Can Fly," opening up affordable travel to millions of passengers worldwide. The airline's main base is Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia, from where flights depart to dozens of countries in the region.

The airline does not belong to traditional global aviation alliances, preferring to develop its own powerful multi-brand ecosystem and partnerships within the group. AirAsia has been repeatedly recognized as the world's best low-cost airline by the prestigious Skytrax rankings, confirming high service quality while maintaining low ticket prices. The company's fleet consists of modern narrow-body Airbus family aircraft, ensuring high efficiency and flight safety.

Baggage

AirAsia's baggage policy is based on a classic low-cost carrier model, where passengers pay only for the services they truly need. The basic ticket price includes only carry-on baggage. Passengers are allowed to bring one bag and one personal item (such as a laptop bag or a small handbag) into the cabin, with a total weight not exceeding 7 kg. The dimensions of the main bag are strictly limited so that it can fit freely in the aircraft's overhead bin.

Checked baggage is not included in the minimum fares and is paid for separately. The airline offers a flexible system of weight packages, allowing you to choose an allowance from 15 to 40 kg. We strongly recommend paying for baggage in advance when booking your ticket online, as rates at the airport are significantly higher. For the occupational safety of the staff, the maximum weight of a single piece of baggage is 32 kg.

Separate rules and specialized service packages are provided for the transportation of special items, such as musical instruments or sports equipment (surfboards, diving gear, golf clubs). Strollers and baby seats are usually carried free of charge as checked baggage. Before departure, be sure to review the list of prohibited items on the carrier's website, especially regarding the carriage of lithium batteries and liquids.

Pet Rules

Pet Policy

AirAsia maintains a rather strict policy regarding the transportation of pets on its flights. On the vast majority of routes operated under the AK code, the transportation of animals in the cabin or cargo hold is not permitted.

  • Exceptions and Restrictions

Different rules may apply on certain flights operated by specific group subsidiaries depending on the laws of particular countries. However, for most international flights, the ban on animals is a standard condition.
  • Service Animals

An exception may be made for guide dogs accompanying passengers with visual or hearing impairments. In such cases, prior coordination with the airline is required at least 48–72 hours before departure, along with the provision of all necessary veterinary certificates.
  • Required Documents

If transportation is permitted as an exception, the owner must prepare a veterinary passport, a vaccination certificate, and an international veterinary certificate that meets the requirements of the destination country.

Due to these strict restrictions, we strongly recommend contacting AirAsia customer support well in advance of your planned trip. Exact rules regarding animal types and service costs are considered mandatory to check on the official website before purchasing a ticket.

Loyalty Program

AirAsia Rewards Loyalty Program

AirAsia Rewards (formerly known as BIG Loyalty) is a modern loyalty program that allows passengers to accumulate points for flights and turn them into real privileges. Participation in the program is free and available for registration through the airline's official mobile app.

  • Membership Levels and Privileges

The program features a status system: as points accumulate, passengers move up to new levels. Elite statuses provide access to priority check-in, expedited security clearance, and exclusive discounts on additional services.
  • How to Earn Points

Points are awarded for every cent spent on airfare, as well as for purchases from numerous program partners: hotels, car rental services, and retail chains. Regular promotions allow you to earn double or triple bonus points.
  • How to Spend Points

Accumulated points can be used for full or partial payment of airfare, purchasing additional baggage, seat selection, or ordering Santan meals. Points can also be exchanged for goods and services within the AirAsia partner ecosystem.

The airline is not part of global alliances, so the program is maximally focused on regional services. To resolve any questions regarding point accrual, members can contact the dedicated email address askrewards@airasia.com or use their personal account on the website.

Services

Operating in the low-cost carrier segment, AirAsia offers passengers a classic Economy Class service where every aspect of the flight can be customized. The main focus is on functionality and safety: cabin seats have standard ergonomics, and for those who value extra comfort, Hot Seats with increased legroom are available in the front rows and at emergency exits.

Onboard catering is provided under the Santan brand as a paid menu. Passengers are offered a wide selection of Asian and international dishes, including the famous Malaysian "Nasi Lemak" rice. We recommend pre-ordering meals during booking — this guarantees the availability of your chosen item and helps you save money. Light snacks and drinks can also be purchased directly during the flight.

For travelers with children, the airline provides the option of priority boarding. The entertainment system and Wi-Fi access are not currently standard for the entire fleet and are only available on certain aircraft, so the availability of these services should be checked before the flight. AirAsia also provides support for passengers with disabilities, offering boarding assistance and specialized equipment upon prior request.

Destinations

The AirAsia route network covers almost all key regions of Southeast Asia, offering travelers convenient and affordable flights. The main link and the airline's primary strategic hub is the city of Kuala Lumpur, from where hundreds of flights depart daily to major metropolises and popular resorts.

Thanks to the well-developed route network, passengers can easily reach significant cities such as Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta, and sunny Denpasar. The airline is constantly expanding its geography, connecting Malaysia with key centers in China, Vietnam, and India, catering to both tourist and business travel across the continent.

Booking Tips

To book AirAsia flight tickets at the best price, it is recommended to plan your trip in advance — ideally 3–5 months before departure. The airline is famous for its massive sales, such as Free Seats, during which the base fare can be minimal, and the passenger only pays fees and taxes. To stay informed about such promotions, it is worth subscribing to notifications in the official app.

Online check-in for flights opens 14 days before departure. We strongly advise completing this procedure yourself via the website or app, as check-in at the airport counter can be subject to a fee on many routes. An electronic boarding pass on a mobile device saves significant time and helps avoid queues.

When choosing a seat, keep in mind that for an additional fee, you can book seats at the front of the cabin for a faster exit after landing. If you plan to bring baggage, always add it to your booking online — this can save up to half the cost compared to paying at the counter. Also, do not forget to take out travel insurance to protect yourself in case of unforeseen delays or changes in plans.

History

The history of AirAsia is an impressive journey of transforming a loss-making state-owned enterprise into one of the most efficient low-cost carriers on the planet. The airline was founded in 1993 and began operating its first flights in 1996. However, its real takeoff began in 2001 when the company was purchased by Tony Fernandes, who decided to implement a budget travel model in Asia similar to European giants.

A key factor in its success was the creation of a powerful operational center in the city of Kuala Lumpur. The airline focused on direct flights at low prices, opening the skies to millions of people who previously could not afford air travel. This approach revolutionized transport accessibility in the region.

The company's fleet developed rapidly: from two used aircraft at the start to a modern fleet of more than a hundred Airbus A320 and A321neo family aircraft. The use of a single aircraft type allowed the company to minimize maintenance and training costs, which became the cornerstone of consistently low fares for passengers.

Today, AirAsia has grown into a global group of companies with branches in several Asian countries. The carrier continues to implement technological innovations, from a biometric boarding system to the development of its own digital ecosystem of services. Remaining true to its roots, the company actively invests in environmental programs, striving to make air travel more sustainable and eco-friendly.
