Getting to Maafaru International Airport (NMF), located on the island of the same name in the Noonu Atoll, is possible in several ways that differ significantly from typical city routes. The main rule for traveling to the Maldives is to plan all transfers in advance, ideally through your hotel or resort.
Hotel and Resort Transfers
This is the most common and convenient way. Most tourists arriving at Maafaru airport are heading to nearby resort islands. The transfer is organized by the host side:
- Speedboat: After landing at Maafaru Airport, a resort representative will meet you and escort you to the boat. This is the primary mode of transportation between the airport and resorts within the Noonu Atoll. Travel time depends on the distance of your island and can range from 15 minutes to an hour. The cost of such a transfer is usually already included in the tour package or paid separately and can be quite high.
- Domestic Flight + Speedboat: If you are flying from Male, a domestic flight to Maafaru is already part of your transfer. Upon arrival, you will transfer to a speedboat to reach your resort.
Transport on Maafaru Island
If you are staying at a guesthouse directly on Maafaru island, getting to the airport is very easy. The island is small, and a trip from any point will take no more than 5-10 minutes. Local taxis in the form of cars or small electric buggies are most commonly used. The trip cost is usually small and fixed, but it's better to confirm it in advance. Many guesthouses also offer their own free or inexpensive transfer.
Public Transport and Car Rental
Please note that there is no traditional public transport, such as buses or trains, on Maafaru island. Car rental services are also absent here, as there is simply no need for them due to the island's compact size.
Airport Parking
Parking at the airport is intended mainly for local transport and service vehicles. For tourists arriving by boat or domestic flights, this is not applicable.
Recommendations: The key to a worry-free journey is coordinating all movements in advance. Be sure to contact your hotel or resort a few days before arrival to confirm transfer details. They will provide you with the exact schedule, cost, and meeting point at the airport.
