How to get to Parana

Getting There: Introduction

Paraná is the picturesque capital of the Entre Ríos province, majestically situated on the high banks of the river of the same name in Argentina. The city is renowned for its breathtaking river landscapes and abundance of greenery, creating a unique atmosphere of comfort and tranquility. Here, rich historical heritage harmoniously intertwines with the beauty of subtropical nature.

The main pride of the locals and a key attraction for tourists is the magnificent Urquiza Park (Parque Urquiza), located on natural terraces. Its avenues offer the best panoramic views of the river, while the well-maintained waterfront is ideal for long walks and watching sunsets. Paraná offers travelers not only relaxation amidst nature but also an introduction to impressive architecture, museums, and the authentic culture of the region.

By Plane

The fastest and most convenient way to reach this region is by air. The city is served by General Justo José de Urquiza Airport (PRA), which handles regular domestic flights and is located very close to the central streets. Thanks to the compact size of the terminal, arrival procedures are quick, and the airport itself is well-connected to the city's infrastructure.

As a convenient alternative, many travelers choose to fly into neighboring Santa Fe (SFN), the airport of which is located just 23 kilometres from Paraná. One can also consider arriving in Rosario (ROS), located 136 kilometres away: this major transport hub often offers more connection options. Both neighboring cities allow for easy access to the final destination, letting you enjoy the views along the way.

It is not possible to reach Paraná directly by long-distance train. The local railway station is operational but primarily serves regional commuter routes connecting the city with surrounding settlements. Therefore, arriving from other regions of the country via a direct rail service is not an option.

Travelers who prefer the charm of rail travel are recommended to book a ticket to the station in the city of Rosario. This is the nearest major railway hub, receiving regular passenger trains from Buenos Aires and other provinces. The journey to Rosario is comfortable and allows one to enjoy the landscapes along the route.

From Rosario to Paraná, a distance of about 136 kilometres remains. This segment of the journey is most conveniently covered by intercity bus. Regular services allow you to complete the route quickly and comfortably, arriving in the capital of the Entre Ríos province in just a couple of hours.

Travel Tips

Preparing for your trip to Paraná will help make your holiday as comfortable and carefree as possible. To ensure you feel confident in this cozy corner of Argentina, we have compiled several important recommendations regarding local features and daily life.

  1. Clothing and Essentials. The climate here is humid subtropical, so in summer (December–February), you will need light clothing made of natural breathable fabrics, a hat, and sunglasses. In winter (June–August), the weather can be changeable and cool, so be sure to bring a jacket and a sweater. Since the city is located on hills, choose comfortable flat shoes for walking in the parks and along the waterfront.
  2. Transport. The historic city centre is compact and pleasant to explore on foot. For traveling longer distances, it is convenient to use city buses, for which you will need to purchase and top up a SUBE card (the national unified transport card). Taxis and "remis" (private taxis) are also widely available and can be ordered by phone or via apps—this is an affordable and safe way to get around.
  3. Finances. The official currency is the Argentine Peso. Although major hotels and restaurants accept bank cards, you will need cash for payments in small cafes, kiosks, and souvenir shops. It is best to exchange currency at official exchange offices or banks in the city centre, avoiding street money changers.
  4. Health and Safety. As the city stands on a river, there are many mosquitoes during the warm season. Be sure to carry insect repellent, especially if you plan evening walks in Urquiza Park. Paraná is considered a relatively calm city, but basic safety precautions should be observed: do not leave belongings unattended and avoid walking alone on the outskirts at night.
  5. Communication. The main language is Spanish. English is not understood everywhere, mostly only by staff in major hotels. We recommend downloading an offline translator and learning a few basic phrases in Spanish—locals greatly appreciate such attempts at communication and always try to help.
  6. Local Etiquette. Argentines are very friendly and open. Upon meeting, even with people they know little, it is customary to kiss each other on the cheek (once). Dinner is eaten late here: restaurants only begin to fill up with people after 21:00, so do not be surprised if an establishment is empty at 7 PM.
  7. What to Avoid. Do not swim in the Paraná River in undesignated areas. The current can be strong and unpredictable, and the bottom may be muddy. Use only official beaches (balnearios), where lifeguards are on duty and swimming zones are clearly marked.
  8. Additional Tip. Take note of the siesta time. In Paraná, as in many provincial cities, life slows down in the afternoon (approximately from 13:00 to 16:30). Many shops and institutions close for a break, so plan your shopping and important errands for the morning or evening.

By following these simple tips, you can avoid minor inconveniences and fully focus on the beauty of the river landscapes and the hospitality of the local residents. May your journey leave only the warmest memories!
