History & Facts

The history of this iconic venue began in the early 1950s. A group of returning veterans decided to create a space for social interaction and mutual support, founding the local RSL sub-branch. The first meetings were held in the old wooden Digger’s Hall, but the club's popularity grew so rapidly that expansion soon became a priority.

The choice of a new location for construction was truly bold and forward-thinking. The site on the corner of Grant and River Streets was a marshy lowland at the time. To build a solid structure on this soil, in 1963, builders had to drive 83 piles to depths of up to 20 meters. This engineering solution literally allowed the club to "rise" above the river.

The official move to the current site took place in 1964 under the leadership of the first manager, Les Schreiber. Since then, the club has been renovated many times, transforming from a modest meeting place for veterans into a modern multifunctional center. Today, it is considered an important architectural and social landmark in Ballina, while still preserving the spirit of camaraderie established by its founders.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the atmosphere and services of the club, we recommend planning a visit of 2 to 4 hours. If your goal is simply to have a quick bite or a cup of coffee with a view of the Richmond River, then an hour or an hour and a half will be quite enough.

However, if you plan to attend one of the live performances, participate in club competitions, or spend the evening playing billiards, time will fly by, and you might need much more time. Families with children should also consider the availability of the kids' club, where little guests can spend a few hours under supervision.
