A feature of this place is its dual name, which reflects respect for the indigenous peoples of Australia. The name "Moort-ak Waadiny" in the Whadjuk Noongar language translates as "meeting place of people." This emphasizes the deep historical and cultural significance of this land for the Aboriginal people, for whom it has served as an important gathering site since ancient times.
In 2021, a large-scale reconstruction of Wellington Square was completed, for which 17.5 million dollars were allocated. As a result of the renovation, the square was transformed into a modern multifunctional public space. Particular attention was paid to the integration of elements reflecting indigenous culture. Special zones were created for ceremonies and cultural events, making the square not just a recreational area, but an important cultural hub.
