Weather in Recife
Current Weather
General Weather Overview
Recife, located in Brazil, boasts a typical tropical climate. The city is characterized by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. Average annual temperatures fluctuate slightly, remaining in a comfortable range from approximately 24°C to 27°C, making the weather predictably warm in any season. Minimum night-time temperatures rarely drop below 21-22°C, while daytime highs consistently stay around 26-30°C.
Although Recife sees no sharp seasonal temperature changes, periods of varying rainfall intensity can be distinguished. The wetter season usually lasts from March to July, when the number of rainy days reaches a maximum – up to 27 days in May, and monthly rainfall can reach 5 mm (as in June). The period from September to November is considered relatively dry, with the fewest rainy days (14-15 in October-November) and minimal rainfall volume (about 1 mm). It is important to note that even in the "dry" season, short-term tropical showers are not uncommon, so a light raincoat or umbrella may come in handy at any time of the year.
Temperature
In Recife, the temperature regime remains attractive for travellers throughout the year. The hottest months are traditionally January, February, and March: during this period, the average temperature holds at 27.2-27.3°C, and daytime highs often reach 30.2°C. The "coolest" months, if one can use that term for the tropical climate of this Brazilian city, are considered to be July and August, when the average temperature is around 24.3°C, and minimum night-time temperatures can drop to 21.8-22.0°C.
The summer period in Recife (conventionally from December to March, although it is warm here all year round) is characterized as constantly hot, with daytime temperatures around 30°C and very warm nights, when the thermometer rarely drops below 24°C. "Winter" (June-August) here is incredibly mild and warm, more reminiscent of a pleasant summer in temperate latitudes. Daytime temperatures during these months are a comfortable 26-27°C, and night-time temperatures drop on average to 22°C. Temperature fluctuations between day and night in Recife are small, usually amounting to about 5-6 degrees Celsius, which is typical for coastal tropical cities thanks to the moderating influence of the ocean.
Precipitation
In Recife, situated in the tropical climate of Brazil, precipitation in the form of rain is observed throughout the year; snow does not fall here. Nevertheless, wetter and drier periods can be distinguished, differing in the amount of precipitation and the number of rainy days.
The season with increased rainfall usually lasts from March to July. June is the month with the highest average monthly rainfall volume, reaching 5 mm. The record holder for the number of rainy days is May, when precipitation is recorded on average for 27 days. In general, it rains very often during this period: March and April count 25 rainy days each, and June – 26. Given the relatively small total amount of precipitation with such frequency, it can be assumed that these are predominantly light or brief rains.
A drier period falls on the months from August to February, with the least amount of precipitation in October and November – only about 1 mm per month. During these months, the number of rainy days also decreases: to 14 in October and 15 in November. Even in months such as January (2 mm of precipitation, 22 rainy days) or August (2 mm of precipitation, 22 rainy days), a high frequency of rainfall persists, but its intensity remains very low.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Recife, it is important to consider its tropical climate, characterized by high temperature and humidity all year round. Average temperatures range from 24°C to 27°C, so the foundation of your wardrobe should be light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, such as cotton and linen. Be sure to bring swimwear, high SPF sunscreen, headwear (a hat or cap), and sunglasses for protection against the active sun, especially while relaxing on the beach or walking around the city.
Despite the warm weather, it rains often in Recife. Data shows that the number of "wet days" is significant throughout the year, peaking from March to July (25-27 rainy days per month with precipitation up to 4-5 mm). Therefore, a light waterproof raincoat or a compact umbrella will become your faithful companions and help maintain comfort during sudden tropical downpours. Even in months with less rainfall, such as October or November, short-term rains are still possible.
Regarding footwear, give preference to comfortable sandals, flip-flops for the beach, and light closed shoes or trainers for long excursions. Although warm clothes are unlikely to be needed, a light jacket, cardigan, or stole may come in handy on cool evenings, especially near the water, or in air-conditioned rooms. The principle of layering here is more for protection from the sun or rain than from the cold.
