How to get to Churchill Falls

You can reach here by combining a flight to regional hubs with a road trip along the legendary Trans-Labrador Highway.

Since there is no direct passenger air service to the settlement itself, it is most convenient for travellers to use airports in neighbouring cities. The nearest arrival points are Wabush (located 204 km away) and Happy Valley-Goose Bay (243 km away), which receive regular flights from major centres in Canada.

The choice of airport depends on your route and connecting flights. Both options will require a subsequent transfer by land, but air travel remains the fastest way to reach this remote region of Labrador.

There is no direct rail connection to the settlement, as there is no train station in Churchill Falls. The railway in this region is primarily industrial; however, passenger trains operate to the region of Wabush (204 km from the destination).

If you decide to include a train ride in your itinerary for the sake of panoramic views of northern nature, be prepared that the final leg of the journey from the station will have to be covered by car. There is no rail access for tourists from the side of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Currently, regular bus routes for tourists to Churchill Falls are not developed. Public transport over such vast distances in the sparsely populated region of Labrador is a rare phenomenon, and most services may be private or for shift workers.

Travellers are advised not to rely on bus services as the main mode of transport. It is much more reliable to consider renting a car or finding travel companions to cover the distances between cities along the Trans-Labrador Highway.

Travelling by car is the most popular and flexible way to reach the location. The drive from the city of Wabush will take about 2.5 hours, during which you will cover a distance of approximately 243 km on a high-quality highway.

An alternative route runs from the city of Happy Valley-Goose Bay: the distance is 287 km, and the travel time is about 2.8 hours. Given the significant distances, a taxi ride can be very costly, so renting personal transport is preferable.

A trip to this remote corner of Canada requires careful preparation, as infrastructure here is limited and nature dictates its own rules. Here are several important tips to make your journey comfortable and safe.

1. Clothing and Equipment. The climate here is harsh, so even in summer, bring a warm windproof jacket and comfortable trekking shoes. In winter, thermal clothing designed for extreme frost is mandatory.
2. Transport. A personal or rented car is a necessity, not a luxury. Ensure the vehicle is in good condition and the tank is full, as distances between fuel stations can be vast.
3. Finances. The currency is the Canadian Dollar (CAD). Although cards are accepted in major spots, always carry cash for payments in small shops or for emergency situations on the road.

5. Insects. During the summer period (June-August), there are many black flies and mosquitoes in the forests of Labrador. Be sure to bring powerful repellents and, potentially, a mosquito head net.
6. Road Safety. Beware of wild animals, especially moose, which often wander onto the highway. Try to avoid driving during dark hours.
7. Food and Water. There is a shop in the town itself, but the selection may be limited. If you follow a specific diet (such as Halal), please purchase groceries in larger cities before departure.
8. Excursions. The main attraction is the hydroelectric power station. Enquire in advance about the possibility of a tour, as access to this secure facility may require prior booking.
