General Weather Overview

The climate in Vancouver is characterized as temperate marine, ensuring the city enjoys relatively mild weather throughout the year, especially compared to the rest of Canada. There are four distinct seasons here, yet without sharp temperature fluctuations. Winters are wet and not very cold, while summers are moderately warm and drier.

The summer months, especially July and August, will delight you with the warmest and sunniest weather. The average temperature during this time hovers around +18°C, and rainfall is minimal, making this period ideal for walks and outdoor activities. Winter, from December to February, is mild in Vancouver, with average temperatures just above freezing. However, it is the winter and autumn months (from November to March) that see the highest amount of precipitation and cloudy days, which is worth considering when planning your trip.

Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with changeable weather. Overall, Vancouver offers comfortable conditions for visiting at any time of year, but if you prefer less rain and more sun, then late spring, summer, and early autumn will be the most favourable time for your visit.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Vancouver is distinguished by moderation throughout the year, making it attractive to visit in any season. The warmest months are traditionally July and August. During this period, the average temperature is a comfortable +17.7°C to +18.4°C, with daily highs often reaching +22°C - +22.6°C. The coolest months are considered to be December, January, and February. The average temperature at this time ranges from +1.9°C to +2.7°C, while minimum night-time temperatures can drop to -0.4°C (in February) and around +0.7°C to +0.9°C in December and January.

Summer months in Vancouver generally offer pleasantly warm and sunny weather. Daytime temperatures in July and August are usually in the range of +22°C to +22.6°C, which is ideal for active leisure and exploring the city. Nights bring refreshing coolness, with temperatures dropping to +13.3°C - +14.3°C. It is worth noting that significant daily temperature fluctuations reaching 8-9 degrees are observed in the summer period, making evenings and early morning hours particularly fresh.

Winter in Vancouver is characterized by its mildness, especially compared to the continental part of Canada. Severe frosts are a rarity here. Average maximum daily temperatures in the winter months (December-February) usually stay within +4.1°C to +4.6°C. At night, the air temperature drops on average to -0.4°C - +0.9°C, with February potentially being the coldest with minimum temperatures just below freezing. Winter daily temperature fluctuations are less pronounced than in summer, amounting to approximately 4-5 degrees.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Vancouver has a distinct seasonal character. The city is known for its humid climate, especially in the autumn-winter period, which can be considered the rainy season. Summer months, conversely, bring significantly less rainfall, forming a relatively dry season.

The highest amount of precipitation falls from October to March. January is the wettest month, with an average of 14 mm of precipitation and about 22 rainy days. It is followed by November (13 mm, 19 days) and December (11 mm, 20 days). In these winter months, with average temperatures close to freezing (especially in January and February with minimum temperatures of 0.9°C and -0.4°C respectively), precipitation can fall not only as rain but also as wet snow, although heavy snowfalls within the city itself happen infrequently. Autumn months, such as October, also bring a significant amount of moisture (9 mm, 16 days).

The dry season in Vancouver falls during the summer months. The driest are July and August, when only 2 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of days with precipitation drops to 7-8. This makes summer the most favourable time to visit the city if you prefer sunny weather. May can also be classified as a drier month with 3 mm of precipitation and 13 rainy days, marking the transition to summer weather. In other months, such as March, April, June, and September, precipitation is moderate, varying from 4 mm to 6 mm, with 14-17 rainy days.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Vancouver, it is important to consider its changeable weather and high humidity, especially in the autumn-winter period. The key principle when packing your suitcase is layering. This will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. Be sure to bring a waterproof and windproof jacket or raincoat, as rain is a frequent occurrence here, especially from October to April. Do not forget comfortable, preferably waterproof footwear, as you will surely want to walk a lot around the city and its picturesque surroundings. An umbrella will also become your faithful companion on rainy days.

If your trip falls during the cold season (from November to March), when average temperatures range from +1.9°C to +5°C, pack warm items: sweaters, fleece jackets, warm trousers, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. During this period, the number of rainy days is at its maximum, so warm waterproof outerwear and footwear are particularly important. For a summer visit (June-August), when the average temperature rises to +14°C - +18°C and precipitation is minimal, lighter items will suffice: t-shirts, shorts, light trousers. However, even in summer, evenings can be cool, so a light jacket or sweater will not go amiss. Sunscreen and sunglasses will come in handy on clear summer days. In the transitional seasons – spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) – the weather can be unpredictable, so a combination of light and warmer clothes, as well as a waterproof jacket, will be the optimal choice.
