Museo de Historia Natural

About

One of the most fascinating places to discover the region's natural wealth is the Concepción Museum of Natural History. Located in the city of Concepción, this museum is considered one of the most important scientific and educational centers in Chile. Its collection is impressive in scale: it houses approximately 13,500 exhibits, covering the history of life's development not only in the Bío Bío region but throughout South America.

The museum occupies a modern and functional building that fits seamlessly into the Acevedo Square space. This location is often called "Plaza Jurásica" (Jurassic Plaza) due to the full-size dinosaur figures installed here, making a visit to the museum a true adventure for families with children even before stepping inside.

The institution's primary mission is the preservation and display of natural heritage. The permanent exhibition is divided into thematic zones that vividly illustrate the Earth's journey from ancient fossils to modern ecosystems, highlighting the unique geographical history of this land.

What to Do

Immersion into the world of science begins in the "Los Naturalistas" hall, where the history of the museum itself and its founders unfolds. Here, you can see collections of exotic and endemic species gathered over decades and learn how the first explorers described the unique nature of the southern latitudes.

Visitors are particularly delighted by the "Mundo de los Fósiles" (World of Fossils) hall. This zone features incredible fossils from the Kiriquina Formation, dating back 65 million years. This is a rare opportunity to literally touch the planet's distant past and see evidence of the region's geological transformations.

Equally interesting is the "Presencia del Carbón" (Presence of Coal) exhibition, dedicated to the "coal era." It showcases not only mineral samples but also authentic miners' tools and an archival photo gallery telling the story of Bío Bío's industrial development. You should finish your tour in the "Espacio Regional" hall, which focuses on sustainable development and the preservation of Chile's modern ecosystems.

Getting There

The museum is conveniently located at Maipú 2359, right within the famous Acevedo Square. This location is easy to spot from a distance thanks to the dinosaur figures, which have led locals to affectionately call the area "Jurassic Park."

If you are in the city center, you can reach the museum on foot in about 20–30 minutes or take a taxi for a quick ride of just a few minutes. For those preferring public transport, numerous bus routes (micros) run along Maipú Street, with stops located in the immediate vicinity of the entrance.

For self-navigation, it is easiest to use Google Maps by entering the museum's name or address. The availability of parking spaces near the square also makes it convenient to visit by rental car.

History & Facts

The history of this scientific institution began in 1902, thanks to the efforts of British naturalist Edwin Reed Brookman. He dedicated a significant part of his life to studying Chilean flora and fauna, becoming the museum's first director and laying the foundation for its extensive collections. Together with taxidermist Gabriel Castillo, he gathered hundreds of unique specimens that continue to fascinate visitors today.

After the founder's death in 1910, Carlos Oliver Schneider took over the lead, managing the museum for 40 years. Under his leadership, the collections expanded significantly with paleontological, archaeological, and ethnographic finds. The museum became an important scientific center, publishing its own research works titled "Comunicaciones."

The building's history has been quite eventful: over the years, the museum changed its address 21 times. The collections survived two devastating earthquakes in 1939 and 1960, but despite all challenges, they were preserved for future generations. In 2003, the museum finally moved into its modern and spacious home, which meets all international standards.

Time Needed

To explore all four main halls at a leisurely pace and see the key exhibits, most visitors need about 1.5 to 2 hours. If you plan to read the information stands in detail or are visiting with children, your visit might take a bit longer.

The museum is very logically laid out, allowing for a sequential transition from one era to another. Half a day is more than enough to combine a tour of the exhibits with a walk through the surrounding "Jurassic Plaza."

The museum welcomes visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, with a break scheduled during weekdays. Monday is a day off, so please plan your visit accordingly.

Current opening hours:
