Travelling through El Tepual Airport (PMC), the main aerial gateway to the Lake District of Chile, will be easier and more pleasant if you follow a few tips. We recommend arriving at the airport at least 2 hours before the departure of a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. Although the airport in Puerto Montt is relatively small, during the peak tourist season (from December to February) it can be quite busy.
To save time, complete online check-in for your flight if your airline offers such a service. This will allow you to go straight to the baggage drop-off counter or pre-flight security check. Have your passport and boarding pass ready for security control. An important feature of Chilean airports is strict phytosanitary control (SAG). Even on domestic flights, be prepared for hand luggage checks for prohibited plant and animal products.
When choosing a seat on the plane, especially on flights to Santiago, it is worth preferring a window seat. In clear weather, stunning views of the Andes and the chain of volcanoes will open up to you. Regarding hand luggage, remember the standard restrictions on carrying liquids (in containers up to 100 ml) and sharp objects. It is strictly forbidden to transport fresh fruits, vegetables, honey, and raw meat products between regions to avoid harming the local ecosystem.
For passengers with transfers, we advise checking with the airline in advance whether you will need to collect and re-check baggage at the transit airport. Typically, on domestic flights with the same airline, baggage is transferred automatically. Customs control is only passed by passengers arriving from abroad, however, SAG phytosanitary control is mandatory for everyone.
To save money, book a transfer from the airport to the city online in advance — this is often cheaper than taking a taxi on the spot. Try to avoid excess baggage, as the surcharge for extra kilograms can be high. Bring an empty water bottle with you to fill it at drinking fountains after passing security and avoid spending money on drinks.
In case of flight delay or cancellation, contact your airline's counter immediately. Its staff will provide current information and explain your rights to compensation, meals, or hotel accommodation. While waiting for departure, you can use the free Wi-Fi, have a snack in one of the cafes, or buy souvenirs in the terminal shops.
