The history of this majestic structure began in 1380 during the reign of the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty—Hongwu. The tower was built on the foundation of an even older building from the Tang Dynasty. Its primary function was practical: huge drums were kept inside, the sound of which carried throughout the district, announcing the time of day.
