General Weather Character

Popayán is famous for its mild and temperate climate, often referred to as "eternal spring". Thanks to its location in the mountainous terrain, there is no exhausting tropical heat here, nor is the city characterised by severe cold. The air temperature remains surprisingly stable throughout the year, staying within a comfortable range of +13°C at night to +21°C during the day, creating excellent conditions for exploring the colonial architecture.

In this region, it is difficult to distinguish pronounced seasons, such as summer or winter: the weather is remarkably constant from January to December. However, travellers should take into account the high humidity and probability of precipitation. Rainy or cloudy days are a frequent occurrence here, so an umbrella or a light raincoat will be indispensable items in your luggage regardless of the month chosen for the trip.

Despite the frequent cloudiness, Popayán's climate is perceived as very pleasant and refreshing. The absence of sharp temperature fluctuations allows for comfortable travel planning for any dates. It is best to dress in layers for walks: during the day it can be warm enough for a T-shirt, but for cool evenings, a cosy sweater or windbreaker will definitely come in handy.

Temperature

The climate of Popayán is distinguished by amazing stability, making the city a comfortable travel destination at any time of the year. There are practically no sharp seasonal changes here: thanks to the proximity to the equator and the mountainous relief, the average annual temperature confidently stays in the range of 17–18°C. Tourists often call this weather "eternal spring", as there is neither exhausting summer heat nor harsh winter cold.

Analysing the temperature indicators, one can notice only minor changes. May and September can conditionally be considered the warmest months, when daily highs reach 21.6°C. At the same time, the so-called "cold" season (for example, November and December) brings only a barely noticeable decrease in the average temperature to 17.2°C. Overall, the weather remains mild and pleasant for walking around the historic centre all year round.

An important feature of the local climate is the temperature difference during the day. If during the day the air warms up to comfortable levels allowing for light clothing, nights in Popayán always bring freshness and coolness. In the dark, the thermometer usually drops to 13–14°C, and in August it can reach a minimum of 13.1°C. Therefore, for evening promenades, travellers are recommended to have a warm sweater or a light jacket with them.

Precipitation

In Popayán, it is difficult to identify a distinct dry season, as precipitation falls here with enviable regularity throughout the year. The city's climate is characterised by high humidity: according to statistics, the number of rainy days varies from 28 to 31 per month. This means that the chance of getting caught in the rain exists almost daily, regardless of the season.

Despite the high frequency of precipitation, its total volume remains relatively small, which often indicates short-term rains or drizzle rather than prolonged tropical downpours. The peak of humidity occurs in May and June, when about 19 mm of precipitation falls. January can conditionally be called the "driest" month with an indicator of 10 mm, however, even at this time, it rains almost every day.

When planning a trip to this region of Colombia, be sure to pack an umbrella or a light raincoat in your suitcase. Constant humidity contributes to the lush growth of greenery and creates a special atmosphere in the city, but tourists should be prepared for the fact that clear skies can quickly change to cloudiness and precipitation at any moment of your journey.

What to Pack

The climate in Popayán is characterised by enviable consistency: an eternal, but rather fresh spring reigns here. Since the air temperature stays in a comfortable range from +13°C to +21°C all year round, the best strategy when packing a suitcase will be the principle of layering. Take T-shirts, long-sleeved tops, and light jumpers or fleece jackets with you, which can be easily combined with each other. For evening walks, when the air becomes cooler, a windbreaker or a mid-season jacket will definitely be useful.

Given the high probability of precipitation in almost any month of the year, waterproof clothing and accessories are your main priority. A compact umbrella, raincoat, or high-quality waterproof jacket with a hood should always be at hand. As for footwear, give preference to comfortable closed trainers or boots with non-slip soles, preferably with water-repellent treatment. Do not forget about sunscreen either: even in cloudy weather, ultraviolet radiation in the mountains of Colombia remains sufficiently active.
