Overview

The climate in Puerto Villamil is best described as mild tropical, heavily influenced by ocean currents. It's a land of eternal summer, but without the sweltering heat, making the weather comfortable for travel year-round. Temperatures are remarkably stable: the mercury rarely drops below +20°C at night and usually stays within the +21°C to +26°C range during the day, creating ideal conditions for outdoor activities and nature exploration.

There is a slight seasonality throughout the year. The period from January to May is considered warmer, with average air temperatures peaking at around +26°C. While more rainy days are recorded during this time, the intensity is extremely low—often just a brief drizzle. The second half of the year, from June to December, brings a pleasant freshness with average temperatures around +21–23°C and a near-total absence of significant rain.

A unique feature of the weather in this region of Ecuador is its exceptional dryness despite its proximity to the ocean. Even in months when statistics show "wet days," the actual rainfall is measured in millimeters. This means travelers needn't worry about long downpours; the weather in Puerto Villamil generally favors explorers, offering dry and pleasant days for discovering the unique fauna of the Galapagos Islands.

Temperature

Puerto Villamil delights travelers with a mild and comfortable climate all year round, without extreme heat or cold. Temperatures here are remarkably stable: annual averages shift gently within a pleasant range. The warmest period is the beginning of the year, from February to April. The peak of the warmth occurs in March, when the average temperature is around +25.9°C, and daytime highs reach +27.7°C. During these months, the air is quite warm, which, combined with higher humidity, creates a true tropical atmosphere.

From June onwards, temperatures begin to decrease gradually, marking the arrival of a cooler and drier season that lasts until the end of the year. The "coldest" months are August and September, when average values drop to +21.5°C – +21.7°C. However, the word "winter" is used very loosely here: even during this period, daytime temperatures stay at a comfortable level of around +23°C, which is ideal for active walks and excursions when the scorching sun is less intense.

A feature of the local climate is the minimal temperature fluctuation throughout the day. The difference between the daytime high and the nighttime low is usually only 3–4 degrees. Even on the coolest nights of the season (from August to October), the mercury rarely drops below +19.6°C. Thanks to such a steady temperature profile, acclimatization is easy, and evenings by the ocean remain pleasant and refreshing.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Puerto Villamil is unevenly distributed throughout the year, forming two distinct periods. Based on statistical data, the first half of the year, from January to May, is characterized by a high frequency of rainy days. For example, up to 20 rainy days are recorded in April, and about 19 in February and March. However, it's worth noting that the total rainfall remains surprisingly low (only 2–6 mm per month), indicating that the rain here is usually very light, short-lived, or takes the form of a fine drizzle.

The second half of the year, especially the period from August to November, is the driest time. During these months, rainfall drops toward zero (0 mm in statistics), and the number of days with any moisture is minimal—from 2 to 4 days per month. This time is ideal for those who prefer clear skies and no rain while exploring Isabela Island.

Overall, Puerto Villamil is not characterized by prolonged downpours or snow. Even in the "wettest" months (March and April), precipitation is unlikely to seriously disrupt travel plans, as its intensity is extremely low. Nevertheless, if you are planning a trip at the beginning of the year, a light raincoat may be useful due to how frequently the sky reminds you of its presence.

Packing Tips

When packing for Puerto Villamil, you should plan for a warm tropical climate that lasts all year. The core of your wardrobe should be lightweight items made from natural, breathable fabrics: t-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and linen trousers. Since the town is practically on the equator, the sun is very strong even on overcast days. Be sure to pack a hat, high-quality sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin during long walks along the coast.

Despite the overall mild climate, the weather has some seasonal characteristics. From January to May, it is warmer, but there are more cloudy days with a light drizzle, so a light raincoat or water-repellent windbreaker will come in handy. From July to November, temperatures drop slightly, especially in the evenings (down to 19-20°C). For this time of year, we recommend layering: bring a hoodie, sweater, or light jacket to stay comfortable after sunset or during boat trips.

A trip to Isabela Island is unthinkable without outdoor activities, so pay special attention to your footwear. You'll need comfortable sandals for the beach and walking around town, as well as closed-toe, broken-in sneakers or trekking boots for excursions across lava fields and to volcanoes. And, of course, don't forget your swimwear—the water temperature here is perfect for swimming in any season.
