Here, history, nature, and modern technology come together under one roof to tell the story of life in one of the planet's harshest regions.

The building's architecture in Finland is an attraction in itself: it is crowned by a 172-meter glass tube that slices through the landscape and symbolizes the ice cover of northern rivers. Walking through this bright gallery, guests can feel the scale of the Arctic expanses while remaining in the warmth and comfort of a modern interior crafted from local materials—birch, granite, and reindeer skins.

Inside lie rich collections, including the world's largest exhibition of Sámi artifacts. Arktikum allows you to touch the daily life of Lapland's indigenous peoples, learn about the habits of wild animals, and witness the magic of the Northern Lights in a special multimedia theater. It is a place where science meets legends, and the harsh nature becomes more understandable and closer to every visitor.

What to Do

In the halls of Arktikum, a true immersion into the life and culture of Lapland awaits you. It’s worth starting with the "Northern Ways" exhibition, which features authentic Sámi national costumes, traditional kayaks, fishing gear, and musical instruments. Particularly striking are the realistic dioramas of northern inhabitants: majestic polar bears and reindeer.

Be sure to visit the interactive "Changing Arctic" section. Here, you can step into an ice cave, feel the cold of a northern river, and visit the Northern Lights theater, where the colorful flashes are recreated using modern technology. For curious visitors, research stations are available that clearly explain the cycle of the seasons beyond the Arctic Circle.

Those interested in history will find the "Rovaniemi Market" exhibition fascinating. It transports you back to the early 20th century—the era of the gold rush and bustling fur trade. You can finish your tour in the library with rare books on northern crafts or in the cozy cafe, where the deadwood pine (kelo) interior creates the unique coziness of an Arctic home.

Getting There

Getting to this iconic location is easy, as it is located just a 10–15 minute leisurely walk from the center of Rovaniemi. A walk along the banks of the Ounasjoki River will allow you to enjoy the northern landscapes even before entering the building itself.

For those who prefer public transport, city buses No. 8, 10, and 12 are suitable, stopping at Rovakatu E. If you are arriving at the railway station, the walk will take about 20–25 minutes (a distance of approximately 2 km).

Travelers arriving from the airport (9 km from the museum) can use taxi services or a special bus, which takes no more than 20 minutes. For drivers, convenient free parking is provided right at the entrance to the complex.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1992, when the center was officially opened to mark the 75th anniversary of Finland's independence. Five years later, in 1997, Arktikum moved into its current modern building, which became a true architectural masterpiece thanks to the work of Danish designers.

The main feature of the structure is its 172-meter glass gallery, symbolizing an "ice finger" pointing north. The structure was designed to withstand extreme temperatures as low as -40°C, while most of the exhibition halls are hidden deep underground, creating an atmosphere of protection and immersion into the depths of the Arctic.

Over the decades of its existence, Arktikum has transformed from a local museum into an internationally recognized science center. In 2007, the innovative "Changing Arctic" exhibition opened here, highlighting the center's role in researching global climate processes and preserving the cultural heritage of northern peoples.

Time Needed

To explore all the exhibitions without rushing and soak up the atmosphere of the North, visitors are recommended to set aside at least 2–3 hours. This is enough time to walk through the glass tunnel, explore the ethnographic collections, and visit the interactive halls.

If you plan to study the materials in the library in detail or want to spend time in the souvenir shop and local cafe, it’s worth allowing half a day. The light flows in the gallery change depending on the time of day, so many guests prefer to linger longer to catch the perfect shot.
