Culture House Korundi

About

A journey into the world of Northern art begins in one of the most unusual buildings in Rovaniemi. Korundi House of Culture is a unique creative hub in the heart of Finland, where history meets modernity. Housed in a former postal motor depot built in 1933, it is one of the few historical landmarks in the region to have preserved its authenticity.

Today, the Rovaniemi Art Museum and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra harmoniously coexist under one roof spanning over 5,000 m². The center was named after the mineral corundum, which is mined in northern Finland. Like this hard stone, the building has become a symbol of the region's resilience and cultural richness, blending the rugged aesthetics of red brick with the elegance of modern design.

This is a must-visit for those who want to see a "different" side of Lapland—not just a snowy fairytale, but an intellectual, profound, and endlessly creative place. Korundi is considered one of the most important cultural venues above the Arctic Circle, offering guests an immersive experience in contemporary Finnish art.

What to Do

Within the walls of this center, art is meant to be both seen and heard. Start by heading to the art museum, where rotating exhibitions showcase the finest examples of contemporary Finnish and Northern art. The displays often touch upon themes of ecology, life in the North, and the search for identity, allowing guests to better understand the Lapland way of life.

The concert hall deserves special attention, renowned for its flawless acoustics crafted by leading experts. If you are lucky enough to catch a performance by the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, you will have an unforgettable experience of pure sound. After your cultural program, stop by Korundi Kitchen & Café—this popular spot is famous for its lunches and vegetarian options—while the Korundi Shop offers unique souvenirs and items from Northern designers.

For those planning an extensive cultural itinerary, the Culture Pass is an excellent choice. This combined ticket is valid for 7 days and allows multiple visits not only to Korundi but also to the Arktikum Science Centre and the Pilke Science Centre.

Getting There

The cultural center's location makes it very convenient for those staying in the city center. The House of Culture is located at Lapinkävijäntie 4, right next to Highway 4 and the Revontuli shopping center. It is just a 10–15 minute walk from most central hotels.

If you are traveling from outlying areas or the famous Santa Claus Village (which is about 8 km away), it is easiest to take a taxi or a local bus heading toward the central station. The Rovaniemi railway and bus stations are also within walking distance, making the center an excellent starting point for exploring the region's culture immediately upon arrival.

History & Facts

The building that now buzzes with cultural life has a remarkable history. Built in 1933 as a postal motor depot, it was one of the very few structures in the city to survive the destruction of the Second World War. After the war, the depot was expanded using bricks salvaged from the ruins of destroyed city buildings, making its walls a true monument to the resilience of Lapland.

In the middle of the last century, this place was known for more than just its functional purpose: the depot's garages often hosted underground dances to avoid the entertainment tax, as well as boxing matches that were popular among locals. In 1986, the art museum moved in, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the building.

The site acquired its modern look and status as a cultural center after a major renovation in 2009–2010, led by the famous Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa. The updated space, named Korundi, officially opened in the spring of 2011. The name was chosen for a reason: corundum is a hard mineral mined in Lapland, with varieties including rubies and sapphires—symbolizing the "stars of the North."

Time Needed

To see all the exhibitions at a leisurely pace and soak in the atmosphere, we recommend setting aside 2 to 3 hours for your visit. About an hour and a half is usually enough to explore the art museum's galleries, while the remaining time is perfect for browsing the design shop or relaxing in the café.

If your plans include an evening concert by the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, add another 1.5 to 2 hours to your total time. A visit to Korundi is often combined with other museums, as it is located right in the center and requires little travel time.
