General Weather Overview
The climate in Tbilisi can be characterized as moderate, with distinct subtropical features, ensuring the city has four clear seasons. Travellers can expect quite varied weather conditions throughout the year, making Georgia's capital attractive to visit at almost any time, depending on your preferences.
Summers in Tbilisi are generally hot and sunny, especially in July and August, when the average air temperature steadily hovers around 23°C, and maximum daytime values can approach 29°C. Winters here are cool but usually not severe, with average temperatures in January and December around 1-2°C; night frosts during this period are a common occurrence. Spring and autumn are pleasant transitional seasons with comfortable temperatures. It is worth noting that the spring months, especially from March to May, may be characterized by a higher number of days with precipitation, although the total amount remains moderate and rarely leads to prolonged rains.
Temperature
The annual temperature progression in Tbilisi demonstrates significant fluctuations, offering diverse climatic conditions for visitors. The coldest month is typically January, with an average temperature of about 1.0°C, while night-time lows can drop to -3.1°C, and daytime highs rarely exceed 5.2°C. Similar figures are observed in December and February. Conversely, the peak heat occurs in July and August. In August, the average temperature reaches 23.1°C, and daytime heat can raise the thermometer to 28.8°C, with night temperatures around 17.4°C. Thus, the annual range of average temperatures is approximately 22 degrees.
Summer months in Tbilisi, from June to August, are characterized as hot. Average daytime temperatures confidently exceed 25°C, and in July and August approach the 29°C mark. Nights bring some relief but remain warm, with temperatures rarely falling below 14-17°C. The difference between daytime and night-time temperatures in summer is quite perceptible, averaging 10-11 degrees, which is typical for continental climate influence.
Winter in the Georgian capital is cool, but without severe frosts. From December to February, average temperatures fluctuate around 1-2.6°C. Night frosts are a common phenomenon, when the temperature drops below freezing (on average to -1.9°C in December and to -3.1°C in January). During the day, the temperature most often stays above freezing, reaching 5-7°C. The transitional seasons – spring and autumn – are distinguished by more moderate temperatures. For example, in April the average temperature is a comfortable 10.5°C, and in October it is 12.0°C, making these periods particularly pleasant for walking and exploring the city.
Precipitation
Precipitation in Tbilisi is distributed unevenly throughout the year, but overall the city is not characterized by large amounts of rain or snow. The wettest period, in terms of precipitation frequency, is spring. March stands out as the month with the highest number of days with precipitation – on average 16 days, followed by April and May, which count 14 wet days each. However, in terms of total precipitation volume, May leads, receiving about 4 mm. The driest month is considered to be August, when on average only 1 mm of precipitation falls, and only about 6 rainy days are observed. Winter months, as well as July, are also characterized by minimal amounts of precipitation (1 mm).
The nature of precipitation in Tbilisi changes depending on the season. In the winter months – December, January, and February – with average temperatures close to zero or slightly above, and minimum temperatures dropping below freezing (down to -3.1°C in January), the falling 1 mm of precipitation over 7-8 days likely represents light snow or drizzle, possibly alternating with rain. In spring, from March to May, despite the highest number of days with precipitation (14-16 days), their total amount (3-4 mm) indicates that these are likely frequent but light rains or drizzle. In summer, especially in July and August, precipitation is extremely rare (1 mm over 6-7 days) and most likely represents very light and short-lived rains. In autumn, the amount of precipitation (2 mm) and the number of rainy days (8-9 in October-November) increases slightly compared to the peak of summer, bringing primarily light rains.
Thus, although the spring months in Tbilisi might seem "wetter" due to the frequency of precipitation, the total amount remains small. Travellers should be prepared for the possibility of light snow in winter and more frequent, but not heavy, rains in spring. Summer, especially August, offers the driest weather with a minimal probability of precipitation.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Tbilisi, it is important to choose the right wardrobe to feel comfortable in any weather. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes will be your best companion, as the city is famous for its hilly streets and cobblestones. The principle of layering in clothing will also be relevant all year round, allowing you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day, especially considering that daytime and night-time temperatures can differ noticeably.
In summer, from June to August, Tbilisi is usually hot and sunny, with the average temperature holding above 20°C, and the maximum reaching almost 29°C. During this period, you will need light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics (cotton, linen), a hat for sun protection, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Evenings can be slightly cooler, so a light cardigan or shawl may come in handy. In winter, from December to February, the weather is cool, with average temperatures around 1-2°C and night frosts dropping to -3°C. Be sure to pack a warm jacket or coat, a hat, gloves, a scarf, and warm, preferably waterproof, shoes. Precipitation in winter is rare and usually comes in the form of light snow or drizzle.
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) in Tbilisi are pleasant transitional seasons with moderate temperatures. In spring, especially in March, April, and May, the number of days with precipitation increases, although the rains themselves are usually light and short-lived. Therefore, a light waterproof jacket or a compact umbrella will be very useful. In autumn, it also wouldn't hurt to have an umbrella with you. For these seasons, layered clothing is ideal: T-shirts, long-sleeved tops, sweaters, or a fleece jacket, which can be combined with jeans or trousers, and a mid-season jacket. Do not forget about sunscreen even in the off-season, as the sun in Georgia can be active, and, of course, about comfortable shoes for exploring the numerous attractions of Tbilisi.
