General Weather Overview

The climate of Kumasi can be described as typically tropical, with high humidity and consistently warm temperatures throughout the year. It practically never gets cold here: even in the "coolest" months, such as August, the average temperature holds at a comfortable +25°C, while in the hottest months, for example in February, it can reach +35°C. This makes the city an attractive destination for those who love warmth, regardless of the season.

A clear alternation of wet and dry periods can be traced in the weather cycle. A pronounced dry season falls in December and January, when the number of rainy days is minimal and the sky is most often clear. The rest of the year, especially from March to October, sees a rainy season with precipitation peaks in June and September-October. In these months, rains can occur quite often, bringing high humidity and brief freshness.

Thanks to temperature stability, travellers won't have to worry about warm clothing — light summer items will be suitable at any time of year. However, if your trip to Ghana is planned for the period from spring to deep autumn, it is worth definitely bringing an umbrella or raincoat, as tropical downpours can be sudden and intense.

Temperature

The climate in Kumasi is characterised by consistently high temperatures throughout the year, which is typical for Ghana's tropical belt. The hottest period falls at the beginning of the calendar year: in February, the average temperature reaches its peak of around 29.7°C, and daytime highs can rise to a sweltering 35.0°C. January and March are also distinguished by hot weather, when the thermometer confidently stays above 33–34°C during the day, creating the atmosphere of a true African summer.

Interestingly, the "coolest" season here arrives in the middle of the year, when it is usually summer in the Northern Hemisphere. In July and August, the heat noticeably subsides, and average temperature readings drop to a more comfortable 25.4–25.5°C. In these months, the daytime heat becomes milder, rarely exceeding 28.5°C, which makes this period favourable for excursions and long walks around the city without the risk of overheating.

Travellers should also take into account daily temperature fluctuations, which are most pronounced in the dry season. For example, in January and February, the difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum can be more than 10 degrees: after a hot day, the air cools down to 23–24°C by night, bringing long-awaited freshness. In wetter months, such as June or September, the temperature regime becomes more even, and nights remain sufficiently warm.

Precipitation

In Kumasi, the change of seasons is clearly traced, where precipitation plays a key role in shaping the weather. The year begins with a pronounced dry season, which lasts from December to February. During this period, rains are a rarity: for example, minimal rainfall and only 2 to 4 rainy days per month are recorded in January and December. This is the most stable time to visit, when the sky most often remains clear.

With the arrival of spring, the picture changes: already in March, the number of rainy days sharply increases to 18. The rainy season here is prolonged and covers most of the year. The summer months are a particularly humid period: in June and July, tourists should be prepared for frequent precipitation, as it can rain up to 24 days a month, bringing high humidity with it.

The second peak of humidity falls in early autumn. September and October are considered the rainiest months of the year: statistics show up to 26 days with precipitation and maximum indicators for their levels (up to 6 mm). Only by November do the elements begin to calm down, and the number of rainy days decreases to 13, gradually returning the city to the dry winter regime.

What to Pack

Since warm weather reigns in Kumasi all year round with an average air temperature from +25°C to +30°C, the basis of your luggage should be light clothing made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Give preference to light-coloured items that heat up less in the sun. Do not forget about reliable protection against ultraviolet radiation: high-quality sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat will become your best friends during walks under the Ghanaian sun.

Given the seasonality, it is worth carefully approaching the issue of rain protection. The period from March to November, and especially September and October, is characterised by a large number of rainy days. At this time, be sure to put a compact but sturdy umbrella and a light raincoat in your suitcase, which can be thrown over a T-shirt — it will protect against water without creating a "greenhouse effect". In the dry months (December — February), rains are unlikely, but a light long-sleeved top will be useful for protection against the evening cool or insects.

For comfortable exploration of the city, choose comfortable footwear: breathable sneakers or sandals with secure foot support are ideal for long walks. If you are travelling during the rainy season, it is better to have a spare pair of shoes that dries quickly. Also, it would not be superfluous to take insect repellent with you, as insect activity can be high in the humid warm climate.
