Overview

The climate in Bhagalpur is of a subtropical monsoon type, characterized by a sharp change of seasons. The city is located in the state of Bihar on the fertile Ganges plain, which largely determines the high humidity throughout most of the year and significant temperature fluctuations. Travelers should expect a hot and dry start to the summer, heavy rains in the middle of the year, and surprisingly mild, pleasant winters.

Throughout the year, the weather in this region of India goes through three distinct cycles. From March to May, the hot season dominates, with the thermometer rising rapidly. In June, the heat is replaced by monsoons, bringing life-giving moisture and freshness, and from November, a cool period sets in, which many consider the ideal time for sightseeing and walking along the banks of the great river.

The average annual temperature in the city stays at around 25–26°C. A feature of the local climate is the stable atmospheric pressure in the winter months and occasional early morning fog or haze, which gives Bhagalpur's historical landscapes a particularly mysterious atmosphere.

Temperature

The temperature in Bhagalpur is characterized by a wide annual range. The hottest period is April and May, when daytime highs often exceed 35–36°C, and on certain days the heat can reach 40°C. Nighttime temperatures during this time remain high — around 23–25°C, creating a "tropical night" effect.

Winter in this part of India arrives in December and lasts until February, offering the most comfortable weather for international travelers. The average temperature in January is around +16.4°C. During the day, the air warms up to a pleasant 21–22°C, but at night it can get noticeably colder — down to 10–11°C. Such daily temperature fluctuations (up to 10–15 degrees) require warm clothing for evening walks.

The summer period in Bhagalpur can be divided into dry heat (March–May) and humid heat (June–September). Although during the monsoon period average daytime temperatures drop slightly to 31–32°C due to cloud cover and rain, the high humidity can make the heat feel more exhausting than the dry 35°C in April. October and November serve as a mild transition to the cool season, with temperatures gradually decreasing to a comfortable 22–26°C.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Bhagalpur depends directly on the movement of the monsoons. The wettest period is between June and October. Rainfall peaks in July and August, when between 250 and 290 mm of precipitation falls per month. During this time, it can be rainy for up to 26–27 days a month, and showers are often accompanied by high humidity, reaching 92%.

The nature of precipitation during the monsoon period is mostly intense downpours followed by cloudy periods. September also remains quite a wet month with heavy rains, but by October their frequency gradually decreases to 9 days a month, marking the end of the wet season.

Winter and spring months in this region of India are exceptionally dry. November, December, and January are virtually cloudless months, when rain is extremely rare (only 1–2 days). February and April are also considered very dry, providing tourists with clear skies and excellent visibility for visiting architectural monuments. Snowfall in Bhagalpur is completely out of the question due to the warm tropical climate.

Packing Tips

For a trip to Bhagalpur between March and June, you will need light cotton clothing that allows your skin to breathe in the intense heat. Be sure to bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a high-quality sunscreen with high SPF, as the sun in this region of India can be very strong. A water bottle and comfortable sandals will be your faithful companions when walking around the city.

If your trip coincides with the monsoon season (June–October), waterproof clothing should be your top priority. A compact umbrella or a quality raincoat is essential, as downpours can start suddenly. You should also consider an extra pair of quick-drying shoes and insect repellent, as insect activity increases in high humidity conditions.

For the winter months (December–February), it is worth sticking to the layering principle. While you will be comfortable in a T-shirt or light shirt during the day, a sweater or windbreaker is a must for early mornings and evenings, as temperatures can drop to +10°C. Regardless of the time of year, do not forget to bring modest clothing for visiting temples and traditional neighborhoods.
