There are two distinct seasons in Cooch Behar. The hot and humid rainy season (monsoon) typically lasts from May to September. During this time, average temperatures hover around 27-29°C, with maximums often exceeding 30°C. This period is characterized by significant rainfall and high humidity, especially from June to August, when it rains almost daily, bringing up to 24 mm of precipitation per month. From November to February, a cooler and drier season sets in. Average temperatures during these months are a comfortable 17-22°C (minimums can drop to 11-14°C), and rainfall is virtually non-existent. March, April, and October are transitional months: in spring, the temperature and humidity gradually rise, while in autumn, the rains subside, retaining the warmth.

Cooch Behar experiences a distinct annual temperature progression typical of a subtropical monsoon climate. The hottest period is usually summer, with peak temperatures in August, when the average temperature reaches 28.9°C, and maximum values can rise to 31.6°C. July and June are also very warm, with average temperatures of 28.7°C and 28.2°C, respectively. The coolest month is January, with an average temperature of 17.4°C and minimum night-time temperatures dropping to an average of 11.6°C. December is also considered a cool month, with an average temperature of 19.1°C.

The summer months in Cooch Behar, roughly from April to September, are characterized as hot and humid. Maximum daytime temperatures consistently stay above 30°C, and night-time temperatures rarely fall below 21-26°C, creating a sensation of constantly warm weather. The high number of rainy days during this period, particularly from May to September, contributes to high air humidity. Winter, on the other hand, offers more comfortable conditions. May brings a significant intensification of rains (12 mm and 24 rainy days). The wettest months in terms of rainfall are June (24 mm) and July (23 mm). During these months, as well as in August (18 mm), it rains very frequently: June sees 29 rainy days, while July and August see rain almost daily, with 30 rainy days each.

In September, the intensity of the monsoon begins to weaken but remains significant—about 16 mm of precipitation falls, with 27 rainy days. October is a transitional month leading into the dry season, with precipitation decreasing to 8 mm and the number of rainy days dropping to 15. Thus, Cooch Behar is characterized by abundant monsoon rains from May to September and an almost complete absence of precipitation from November to January. Snow is not characteristic of this region.

When planning a trip to Cooch Behar, it is important to prepare a wardrobe suitable for its warm and humid climate with a distinct rainy season. From November to February, the weather is most comfortable and dry: the average temperature stays around 17-20°C, dropping to 11-14°C at night, and rainfall is minimal. During this period, you will need light clothing for the day (t-shirts, thin trousers, or skirts) and something warmer for the evening and morning—such as a light jacket, sweater, or fleece top. Comfortable closed shoes for walking will be very useful, as well as sunscreen and a hat, as the sun can be strong.

From March, the temperature begins to rise, marking the arrival of the hot season, which smoothly transitions into the monsoon period from May to September. During this time, average temperatures range from 24°C to 29°C, and rainfall increases sharply, peaking in June and July when almost every day can be rainy. For this period, choose extremely light, breathable, and quick-drying clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen. A sturdy umbrella and a light raincoat or poncho will be essential companions. Consider open shoes that can withstand water (such as sandals) or bringing a spare pair. Don't forget insect repellent, which is especially relevant during the wet season. In April and October, the transitional months, frequent rains are also possible, so being prepared for them is advisable.
