General Weather Overview

The climate in Dehradun can be described as subtropical, with clearly defined seasons and influenced by monsoons. Winters (December to February) are relatively mild and predominantly dry here, with average temperatures around 9-12°C. Spring (March-May) brings significant warming: the average daily temperature gradually rises from 16°C to 23°C, while rainfall remains low. The summer months, from June to September, are the warmest and most humid, coinciding with monsoon activity; average temperatures during this period fluctuate between 23°C and 25°C.

The most striking feature of Dehradun's climate is the monsoon period, which usually lasts from June to September, peaking in July and August. This time sees the highest annual rainfall (for example, up to 15 mm in July), and the number of rainy days increases sharply – at the height of the monsoon, rain can fall almost daily, although its intensity may vary. From October, the rains subside, the weather becomes predominantly dry and sunny, and the air temperature drops comfortably, heralding the arrival of winter. November stands out especially as the driest month, when precipitation is practically absent.

Temperature

The climate in Dehradun is characterized by significant seasonal temperature fluctuations, offering diverse weather conditions throughout the year. The hottest month is usually June, when the average temperature reaches 25.4°C, and maximum daytime values can rise up to 30.5°C. Conversely, January is considered the coldest month: the average temperature during this period is 9.3°C, and night-time minimums can drop to 3.3°C. Thus, the annual temperature range in the city is quite wide, from cool winter nights to sultry summer days.

The summer season in Dehradun, covering the months from May to August, brings hot weather. In May and June, daytime temperatures often hover around 29-30°C, creating a feeling of intense heat. July and August, although remaining very warm with average temperatures around 24.5-24.7°C, are also characterized by high humidity due to the large number of rainy days, making the heat feel more oppressive. Maximum temperatures during these peak summer months steadily hold in the 27-28°C range.

The winter period, from December to February, brings pleasant coolness to Dehradun. Daytime temperatures in January, the coldest month, can be around 15.3°C, which is quite comfortable for walking. However, nights become significantly colder, and the air temperature can drop to 3-5°C. An important feature of the Dehradun climate is the noticeable daily temperature variation throughout the year. The difference between daytime highs and night-time lows often exceeds 10-12°C (for example, in April the difference is about 14°C, and in January – 12°C), making evenings and morning hours noticeably crisper even in the warm seasons.

Precipitation

The city of Dehradun experiences pronounced seasonality in the distribution of precipitation throughout the year, with a clear division into wet and dry periods. Understanding these patterns will help you better plan your trip and prepare for possible weather conditions.

The greatest amount of precipitation falls in the summer months, forming the monsoon season. This period usually lasts from June to September. July is the wettest month, with an average of 15 mm of rainfall, and there are about 30 rainy days, meaning it rains practically every day. August is also very rainy, with 12 mm of precipitation and approximately 30 rainy days. June (4 mm, 19 rainy days) and September (8 mm, 25 rainy days) also see significant rainfall, preceding and concluding the peak of the rainy season. During these months, rains can be intense and prolonged.

The dry season in Dehradun falls between October and May. The driest month is November, when there is practically no precipitation (0 mm) and only about 3 rainy days. October (1 mm, 6 rainy days) and December (1 mm, 4 rainy days) are also characterized by very low rainfall levels. From January to April, the amount of precipitation remains small (about 2 mm per month), however, the number of rainy days fluctuates from 7 to 10. This suggests that light, short-lived rains or drizzle are possible in these months, rather than heavy downpours. In May, rainfall remains at 2 mm, but the number of days with precipitation increases to 15, indicating the approach of the monsoon season.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Dehradun, it is important to consider seasonal weather changes to pack your suitcase correctly. During the cool period, which lasts roughly from October to March, average temperatures range from 9°C to 19°C, and nights can be quite cold, with minimum temperatures dropping to 3-5°C, especially from December to February. It is recommended to bring layered clothing: light sweaters, a fleece jacket, a warm jacket for evening walks, as well as comfortable trousers and closed-toe shoes. Although there is little rainfall at this time (0-2 mm per month), the number of rainy days can reach 7-9 in January-March, so a light umbrella or windbreaker may come in handy.

From April to September, warm and then hot weather with high humidity sets in in Dehradun, especially during the monsoon period from June to September. Average temperatures at this time are 23-25°C, but can rise above 30°C. During this period, you will need light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, a hat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen. From June to September, rainfall increases significantly (up to 15 mm in July), and almost every day can be rainy (up to 30 days in July and August), so be sure to pack a sturdy umbrella, a raincoat, and possibly waterproof shoes or sandals that dry quickly. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes will be your best companion for exploring the city and its surroundings.
