General Weather Overview

Ludhiana's climate can be characterised as subtropical with distinct seasonal contrasts, typical of northern India. The weather here changes from a cool and dry winter to an extremely hot summer, which then gives way to the humid monsoon season. Travellers should take these sharp changes in temperature and humidity into account when planning their wardrobe and timing their trip.

The hottest period falls in May and June, when average maximum temperatures can reach 37–38°C. Following the heat, starting from July, the monsoons arrive in the region. July and August are the wettest months: the number of rainy days exceeds 20 per month during this time, bringing high humidity but slightly reducing the summer heat.

Winter, lasting from November to February, is considered the most comfortable time to visit. Clear and dry weather sets in during this period. The average temperature in January is around 12°C; however, one should be prepared for cool nights when the thermometer can drop to 7°C. Transitional seasons, such as October and March, delight visitors with pleasant warmth and a lack of heavy rainfall.

Temperature

An important feature of Ludhiana's microclimate is the sharp daily temperature fluctuations, which are most pronounced during the transitional seasons. If you are travelling in spring (March-April) or autumn (October-November), be prepared for the weather to change right before your eyes. For example, in April, the difference between the daytime heat and the night-time chill often exceeds 15°C: during the day the air heats up to 34°C, forcing you to seek shade, while by night it cools down to a bracing 19°C.

This dynamic requires a special approach to your wardrobe from tourists — the principle of layering works perfectly here. In the morning and evening, you will definitely need a light jacket or a thick jumper, which you will want to swap for a T-shirt during the day. The weather is particularly deceptive in October: after the rainy season, humidity drops, and daytime highs of 30–31°C are relatively easy to bear, but immediately after sunset the city cools rapidly, and by midnight the temperature drops to 18–19°C.

In the winter months (December-January), thermal comfort depends heavily on the presence of sunshine. During the day, when the air warms up to 17–20°C, the weather seems ideal for walks. However, it is worth noting that central heating in homes is a rarity, and night-time temperatures drop to 6–7°C. Therefore, despite sunny days, warm clothes and pyjamas will be just as necessary for comfortable sleep and evening outings as sunglasses are during the day.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Ludhiana is distributed unevenly throughout the year, creating a clear division into wet and dry seasons. The rainiest period falls in mid-to-late summer, when monsoons bring significant humidity. July and August are the undisputed leaders in rainfall frequency: July sees an average of about 24 rainy days, and August about 22. During this time, travellers should be prepared for frequent rains that soften the summer heat.

For the rest of the year, the weather remains predominantly dry. The driest period begins in autumn: October is considered the driest month, when precipitation is practically absent (averaging 0 mm), and the number of wet days drops to a minimum. In winter and spring, rains occur rarely, usually no more than 5–6 days a month, and fall exclusively in liquid form, as temperatures remain above freezing even in the coldest months.

What to Pack

When packing your suitcase for Ludhiana, it is important to consider the time of year, as the climate here changes from very hot to cool. If you are planning a trip during the summer months, especially in May and June, when temperatures often rise to 38°C, opt for light clothing made from natural, breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. Be sure to bring reliable sun protection: a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high SPF cream to feel comfortable under the bright Indian sun.

For travel during the monsoon season (July to September), you need to prepare for high humidity and frequent rainfall — for instance, July can have up to 24 rainy days. During this period, a sturdy umbrella and a lightweight raincoat that is easy to carry will become indispensable. It is also recommended to bring waterproof shoes or sandals that dry quickly and do not slip, as roads can be wet.

In winter, from December to February, the weather becomes noticeably cooler, especially in the evening and at night, when temperatures can drop to 7°C. In this season, it is best to use the layering principle: pack warm sweaters, a mid-season jacket, and perhaps a scarf. Regardless of the season, for walking around the city, you will need comfortable, proven walking shoes to explore the sights with comfort.
