General Weather Overview

The climate in Nagpur, India, is characterised as tropical savanna, with distinct dry and wet seasons. Overall, the weather here is hot for most of the year, with significant fluctuations in temperature and rainfall depending on the season.

Three main seasons can be distinguished. The hot and dry season lasts roughly from March to May, when temperatures reach their peak values, often rising above 35-40°C, and rainfall is practically non-existent. Then, from June to September, the monsoon season arrives. During this period, the temperature drops slightly, but humidity increases significantly, and the bulk of annual rainfall occurs. July and August are the rainiest months. From October to February, cooler and drier weather sets in, which can be considered the winter season. Temperatures at this time are comfortable, averaging around 20-25°C, and rainfall is minimal.

Thus, when planning a trip to Nagpur, it is worth considering these seasonal features. The hottest months are April and May, while the wettest period falls on June-September. The winter months, from October to February, offer the most pleasant weather conditions for visiting the city.

Temperature

The climate in Nagpur is characterised by significant annual temperature fluctuations. The hottest months are traditionally April and May. In May, the average temperature reaches 34.6°C, and maximum daytime readings often exceed 40.7°C. The coolest period falls on December and January, when the average temperature is around 20.8°C - 21.2°C. During these months, night-time temperatures can drop to 14.6°C - 15.2°C, creating a pleasant coolness.

The summer months in Nagpur, especially from March to May, are distinguished by intense heat. In April, the average temperature is 32.2°C (minimum 25.3°C, maximum 39.0°C), and in May it rises to 34.6°C (minimum 28.5°C, maximum 40.7°C). Daytime and night-time temperatures during this period remain high. Daily temperature fluctuations in these peak months of heat can be quite noticeable; the difference between the maximum and minimum temperature is often 12-14°C. With the arrival of the monsoons, starting from June, temperatures decrease slightly, but high humidity makes the weather noticeably muggy. For example, in July, the average temperature holds at 27.5°C (minimum 24.9°C, maximum 30.0°C).

The winter season, covering the months from December to February, offers residents and guests of Nagpur mild and comfortable weather. In January, the coldest month, the average temperature is 20.8°C, while during the day the air warms up to a pleasant 27.0°C, and at night it cools down to 14.6°C. Similar conditions are observed in December (average 21.2°C, min. 15.2°C, max. 27.2°C). The difference between day and night temperatures in winter is also significant, reaching 12-13°C, which ensures warm sunny days and cool nights. Transitional months, such as October and November, are characterised by a gradual decrease in temperature after the monsoons and comfortable weather conditions.

Precipitation

In Nagpur, there is a pronounced seasonality of precipitation, with a clear division into wet and dry periods. Most of the annual rainfall occurs within a few months, while during the rest of the year, rains are extremely rare.

The rainy season, or monsoon, usually falls on the period from June to September. July is the wettest month, when an average of 14 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days reaches 27. August is also characterised by a significant amount of rainfall (11 mm) and a large number of rainy days (22). Frequent rains are also observed in June and September, although with less intensity compared to the peak of the monsoon. Precipitation during this period usually takes the form of downpours.

The dry season in Nagpur lasts from November to May. During these months, precipitation is practically non-existent. From January to May, as well as in November and December, the average rainfall is 0 mm. November stands out as the driest month with only one rainy day on average. October can be considered a transitional month when monsoon rains weaken, and the amount of precipitation decreases to 2 mm with 8 rainy days.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Nagpur, it is important to consider its climatic features to pack your suitcase correctly. The city is characterised by hot summers, a monsoon season, and milder, pleasant winters. In general, light and breathable clothing will be your best companion for most of the year.

From March to May, it is very hot in Nagpur, with temperatures often exceeding 35-40°C, and practically no rainfall. During this period, pack light cotton or linen clothing, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and high SPF sunscreen. From June to September, the monsoon season arrives. The temperature drops slightly but remains high, and rainfall increases significantly, especially in July and August (up to 14 mm and 27 rainy days). You will need a waterproof jacket or raincoat, a sturdy umbrella, and quick-drying clothing. Footwear should be either water-resistant or something you don't mind getting wet. Don't forget insect repellent.

From October to February, the weather in Nagpur becomes significantly more comfortable. Daytime temperatures range from 27-31°C, while night-time temperatures can drop to 14-17°C, especially in December and January. At this time, layered clothing is recommended: T-shirts, light shirts, as well as a sweater or light jacket for evening strolls and morning hours. Rainfall during this period is minimal. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are a must, as you will surely want to explore the city. An electronics adapter and a small first aid kit will also be useful.
